Lupe Disputes His Soundscan Numbers

A guy who posts as “Lupe” on Atlantic Records message board claims that the 58,000 units reported by Billboard is missing Best Buy’s figures:

hahahaha….hi my peoples…actually this weeks Billboards numbers are off because of an error!!!…Best Buy hadnt turned in their sales…I must remind I was the number #1 seller at Best Buy this week…the numbers without Best Buy stand at 57,000…the new numbers will be out this friday after they turn in…hahahahaha…GOD IS GREAT!!!!

Judging by the same user’s previous posts, there’s no doubt in my mind that Lupe truly made the above entry. I wonder why he didn’t post this on his MySpace blog which is more popular and obviously has the capacity to reach more folks. Then again, I wonder why hitsdailydouble.com reported 85,000, while Billboard claimed it was only 58,000.

Not that it’s impossible for him to have really done those shitty numbers–after all, he’s not dissin’ anybody or making up some gimmicky dance moves. However, according to Best Buy’s official website, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor is the current best seller in the rap / hip-hop category.

UPDATE: Lupe was absolutely right. Not only did a recent Atlantic Records press release corroborate this claim, Billboard has also noted that “system failure at a significant chain made it impossible for data from that company’s stores to be included when Nielsen SoundScan processed the sales charts that were released Sept. 29 on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz.

Either way, homeboy still is still trying to swim in a sea full of bricks lol. This is sad, though. But I can’t say that I didn’t predict this in my blog.

i’m not surprised that he flopped

13. Poetic One Says:

Lupe has to be the most hyped nigga in the game but he brings freshness to the table.

15. MC Dizzy Says:

He’s so different he might change the game if we give him a chance

16. Nana Says:

Lupe isnt afraid to voice his concerns. He’s different but people are scared of change.

17. UHol Says:

it all boils down to marketing
if atlantic really throw their weight behind dude, he will sell

18. Xavier Says:

hip hop is dead

19. Rizoh Says:

“he needs to get dropped from his label like kim”

@FamBizz: Would you like to get fired from your job? Gettin’ dropped is not the thing to wish on anybody regardless of how you feel towards that person.

20. Zane Says:

fiasco is the truth
the best thing out this year to say the least

21. Taj Says:

24. Fam Bizz Says:

He’s not wack or nothin
hes got a hot flow and i cant front on that but i just dont feel it. just my two cents

25. Illmatic620 Says:

I actually dont feel his flow that much, i get sick of the swagger Jay-Z-style flow, but his lyrics are on-point I copped him shit.. on itunes though not sure if that counts soundscan, I actually believe that best buy stuff.. hes gonna go gold or plat dont worry

26. Rizoh Says:

I guess we’ll have to wait till next week to see about the Best Buy stuff.

However, I just came back from Best Buy (I wanted to pick up the new Citizen Cope before realizing that I might have one coming in the mail real soon). Anyway, Food & Liquor was noticeably missing from the shelf. I asked one of the music guys down there and he said it was sold out.

Could it be that Atlantic didn’t ship enough copies since they probably didn’t expect F & L to sell out?

That’s another factor to consider.

27. Titi Says:

^^That makes sense

28. Sizzla Says:

he cant sell records because of too much lean wit it rock wit and laffy taffy

29. Trillster Says:

Lupe you have no commercial value dawg, deal wit it

30. cans Says:

They’re not dolls! They’re action figures.

His album ain’t bad, but I still don’t see how this “change the game” shit got tacked on to him.

31. Yoyo Says:

They’re not dolls! They’re action figures.
^^^
lol, i knew that

32. Darkpoet Says:

He’s music is chill but his actions are questionable. Needs to grow up and be happy he got a chance to express his music and feelings to a wide audience. 57,000 copies sold with no protion(Only 1 mainstream video), dude should be on cloud 9.

33. Yoyo Says:

what action figure is that anyway

34. $B Says:

that was a bit childish

35. Say Says:

>fiasco is the truth

36. Say Says:

Oh, and Laffy Taffy Rots Your Teeth.

37. JaySun Says:

laffy taffy causes cancer

38. Ye Says:

Congrats to Lupe on the album. I copped it and it was fire. It’s about time someone came to resurrect hip-hop. I am in no way implying that he can do it by himself but it’s a good start. It was nice to hear somebody rap wihtout having to curse to make it sound good. The kid gots skills.Just cop the album and give him a chance.Don’t be fooled by Kich Push.

39. N-word Says:

I have seen Lupe’s album sell out In several places. Its possible that If His first shipment was’nt that big say 100,000, 120,00o thousand or so. If he sold 85,000 That a big percentage. Food over liquor

40. Rizoh Says:

Maybe it’s just me, but when your album sells out and you still didn’t reach the 100,000 mark, that’s an indication that the first shipment wasn’t that major. Atlantic lost on this one. I still find thousands of copies of T.I.’s album everywhere.

41. Zane Says:

lupe deserves to sell 1 milly in first week
