Armand de Brignac: The New Negro Drink?

I never really paid any attention to Armand de Brignac (aka “Ace of Spades”)…well, not until Armand CEO Brett Berish jumped up and down in excitement, following the calculative product placement (word to Clyde) in Jay-Z’s new video for “Show Me What You Got.”

“We’re delighted to have someone of Jay-Z’s stature include Armand de Brignac in the first video for his new album,” said Armand de Brignac President/CEO Brett Berish. “Jay-Z has always demonstrated the highest standards and finest taste, and we’re honored to see Armand make an appearance in ‘Show Me What You Got.’ Armand’s unmatched taste and package are a perfect fit for the video.”

Like most things Jay-Z-related, the net has been ablaze with this news for the past four days. What’s really mind-boggling is that this same Shawn who was all teary-eyed over the gravity of world water crisis, is cosigning a ridiculously expensive liquor on the other hand. How important is champagne to the kids who buy his records? Is that what the average black youth really needs? Who gives a flying f*ck about what Hov is sippin’ on when he’s on a yacht with his opulent friends, while there are bigger problems facing our community as we speak? Funny thing is, he seems to agree with me:

“F*ck cristal, so they ask me what we drinking/I thought dude’s remarks was rude, okay/ So I moved on to Don, Krug, (??)/And it’s much bigger issues in the world, I know/ But I first had to take care of the world I know…” (Jay-Z, “Kingdom Come)

How tame.

Let the craze begin, though. According to Armand’s press release, demand for their product has skyrocketed since Jay-Z’s video. The video debuted on October 16th. The press statement, probably written on the 17th or earlier, came to light on the 18th. So, when did demands triple? Let me guess, folks watched the video once or twice and then quickly got on the phone the same day like “Yo, lemme get 2 gazillion bottles of that Ace of Spades featured in Jay’s video.”

Negro, please.

Anyhow, I’m not a “big drinker”, and I ain’t about to start just because Jay-Z said “Gold Bottles” is that next shit. If demand for this illogically exorbitant brew has truly tripled based on Jay’s video alone, it just goes to show how counterproductive our community has become. It’s a sad day in hip-hop when we allow ourselves to be subdued by the same tentacles we’ve been trying to bolt from. The new negro drink should be coffee, if you ask me, because we could really use a wake-up call.

6. dax3er Says:

Agreed. There’s plenty of young cats out there, trying to buy a bottle of cristal and armand and staying with their parents, or dont have a car, but they cant pay rent.

I agree with jay-z that we should boycott cristal b/c of management’s view of the hip-hop culture. I’m old school and believe that any company that disrespects people of color should be hit where it hurts the most — in the pocket.

this is some shit. product placement has been around for a few in hip hop. ‘pass the courvoisier’ anyone? russell simmons also tried to finalize a deal with mcdonalds to sell big mac’s by getting them in songs, and then on the radio. this is crazy.. hiphop was never about this… hip hop is going commercial, and jayz is continuing the trend…

real talk.

17. Haginas Says:

jay-z been selling out the culture for years.

18. Rizoh Says:

I’m still waiting for Jay-Z to say that PSPs are cool, that him and Just Blaze play it all the time. Then watch those bad boys fly off the roof. Demands will quadruple then.

Shows the power of a cosign. Now if we can get Jay to cosign things that truly do matter that’d be nice..

I’d like to see IF he speaks on this world water situation.

24. Sayko Says:

YOU ASK WHY JAY-Z IS WASTING HIS TIME PROMOTING ARMAND BUT I’D LIKE TO ASK ARE YOU DOING ANY KIND OF COMMUNITY WORK OR DONATING ANY OF YOUR INCOME TO ANYTHING? SWEEP AROUND YOUR OWN FRONT DOOR BEFORE YOU GO OUT IN THE STREET PREACHING (AND GOSSIPING).

Awwww. This is the beauty of being a negro.

26. ur face Says:

Well since he has so much Power why dosent he advertise rebuilding new orleans.. all those fundraisers and people are still homeless. Between him his girl B and Puff (just to name a few) they could build whole apartment complex’s and subdivisions.. that would be beneficial

27. Kris Says:

I hate how everytime a black person does something at the expense of his people we champion them as “great businessmen”… selling out is not original.

Smooches!

28. Anonymous Says:

Sellin’ out? How about making money?

29. gr8face Says:

it’s the herd mentality. people need someone to tell them what to think.

30. Sparkakus Says:

This kinda stuff keeps happenin cause us black folks are gullible and will buy anything that makes our skin whiter and hair straighter.

31. jen nj Says:

32. Anonymous Says:

Together we stand, divided we fall.

33. TRUMP Says:

Albeit anyone who has something negative about this whole thing with Jay-Z’s new product endorsement cant afford to buy the shit! PERIOD Dont get mad Get MONEY then decide what you want to do with yours… As for me I drink DOM,Vue Cliquot,Moet and CRYS even though Jay_z is opposed of it. What he or you eat dont make me SH#T

34. TRUMP Says:

For summary of my point do what makes you happy. If you want to spend all or some of yours to save the world go ahead. If you want to through it in a camp fire thats fine its your money ENJOY you worked hard for it. : )

35. Will B Says:

So whats the point of this article. To inform me that Jay Z is promoting ANOTHER company. If you don’t want to drink Armand de Brignac, its ok. Jay Z also promotes Budweiser, thats your call, I rather become familar with luxury. Awesome looking bottle, hope the taste matches, I’ll find out soon.

36. Will B Says:

Since when is increasing your net worth selling out. Thats bull, and thats why no one gets ahead. theres no honor in being broke. i agree with Trump. You find a way to become worth over 300 million and save the world. Stop looking for a hand out.
