actually gema is a “performance rights organization” (thanks wikipedia!), so I think they rep the artists directly, not a consortium of music labels.

A fundamental problem for the record industry is that the record companies lose from downloading, but artists might win. It’s to the benefit of an artist, who makes money from concerts and t-shirts and endorsements, if his or her music can be heard by as many people as possible.
