Joel Ortiz - Keep on Callin’

The more I hear from Joel Ortiz, the more I’m convinced that he’s poised to become one of the future greats if given a chance. In fact, it’s a travesty that I failed to include him in my 10 Rappers to Watch list. Actually, I hadn’t heard much of Joel’s music as of October 2006 when I compiled that list.

Now, I don’t know if I can call this an official collabo, since Joel is simply rapping over an old Akon song (P-Money is blanked out and replaced with “Joel Ortiz” in the chorus) that first made rounds in 2004. Regardless, I’m anxiously anticipating his Brick Bodega LP (Koch), due out April 24th.

(Audio via Koch Records) (Thanks, Matt.)

As a black mother trying to instill progressive values in my sons, I am outraged by black liberals who claim the likes of Imus and Rove are mocking hip-hop. Hip-hop mocks and degrades itself and when anybody holds a mirror up to the minstrel rappers of today, they get offended. When they themselves have no pride or respect for us or our past. Young Buck using the slur that was used to refer to black men during slavery. Calling himself an animal no less, then grinning like a fool into the camera with enough jewels in his mouth to light up the runway for a plane to land at night. People please get angry over black drug dealers, robbers, thugs, and older black felons who prey on young black men in prison infecting them with AIDS. Start thinking with your brains and not your emotions.

I like Joell he’s a regular dude, not trying to make himself out as far as I can tell to be something he’s not since hip hop is so concerned with this “realness” thing these days it just gets old after a while.

Dude does nothing for me at all. Sounds like just another rapper to me.

@Rizoh: your “poised to become one of the future greats if given a chance” comment is hilarious, as if Ortiz isn’t signed to Aftermath… even though that fact might actually strengthen your argument LOL.

13. Rizoh Says:

^lol
I should’ve expanded on that point. When was the last time Aftermath released an album?
Besides, the hipster media has a knack for turning on dope lyricists, especially the ones that don’t rap about selling crack or killing everybody. Once they turn their backs on artists who illuminate the darkness of hip-hop (like they did The Roots, Lupe, Brother Ali), their readers are likely to do the same. It’s pathetic.
