Top 10 Albums of 2007…so far

At everyone’s behest, I decided to wriggle out ten good hip-hop albums from an otherwise uneventful first half of ‘07. In case you missed it earlier, here’s my list in order of bias appreciation:

10. Black Milk - Popular Demand
9. Hell Razah - Renaissance Child
8. El-P - I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead
7. Joel Ortiz - The Briick: Bodega Chronicles
6. Evidence - Weatherman LP
5. Devin the Dude - Waiting to Inhale
4. Pharoahe Monch - Desire
3. Prodigy - Return of the Mac
2. Sean Price - Jesus Price Superstar
1. Brother Ali - Undisputed Truth
(Full gist)

Bonus List:

Rizoh’s Favorite Non-Hip-Hop Albums of 2007
5. Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad (shhh)
4. Jill Scott - Collaborations
3. White Stripes - Icky Thump
2. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
1. Feist - The Reminder

Sidenote: I was looking at Bol’s Best 10 yesterday and thought, “Wow, we agree on all but four albums.” In fact, two of the albums I briefly considered for my own Top 10Ear Drum and Hip-Hop Lives–also made his list. (Btw, that Prodigy album is good, please believe.)

What’s yours?

I have heard plenty a good things about that Arcade Fire CD.

2. Ivan Says:

Well, first and foremost, today’s 7/7/7, so you know what that means right? Yep, you guessed it: the return of 2pac!
LOL…maybe next…….7 years…?
Riz…your list is on point, although I see a bit of H-town bias in favor of Devin, LOL, but hey, maybe it’s just me…
Though it’s hard for me come up with any particular 1-10 order, I’d probably swap Devin, El-P & Evidence for Redman, Phat Kat & Jazzy Jeff…….now I gotta figure out a way to fit Marco Polo in there….

My non-hip-hop list would prolly be:
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Feist - The Reminder
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (2006-UK; 2007-US)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Jilly from Philly - Collaborations

….ufck it, I think I’ll make a list of my own…..

3. J T Says:

doep list.

i’d swap that black milk album for krs one though

4. HHFanatic Says:

People keep talking down about Return of the mac…that shit was pure quality hiphop. Fuck what prodigy does in his day to day life, the question is whether he sounds good mixed with Alchemist’s beats and the answer is yes….I posted this on my blog. People have been forced to believe they need to pay too much attention to whats going on in the artists lives.

Great Blog dudes!!

P.s. and if anyone hasnt bought Amy Winehouse by now then give up living (jk) peace

5. esbee Says:

Similar in some respects..

Your best non hip hop is nice! Feist, Amy, and Icky Thump were all great cds. Only ones on the hip hop list worthy of top 10 was devin and prodigy the rest i could live without.

7. Jus Belize Says:

8. Ivan Says:

10. Swag Diesel Says:

Each to their own.

11. Rizoh Says:

DP, I’ve been using gmail for a good 2 years and still have no idea how to initiate chat sessions on there. You’re welcome to hit me up there or on aim (preferably aim). Holla.

12. J To The A.A.P. Says:

Amy dropped here last year so I can’t put that on my list… Let’s see, I’ve been spinning Bonde Do Role’s album ‘With Lasers’ a lot lately, fun stuff. Arctic Monkeys’ Favourite Worst Nightmare got serious spins and Lefties Soul Connection’s second album ‘Skimming The Skum’ came out last month which is dope.

As for none hiphop albums? As is I said earlier, I honestly can’t bring up a real top 10 so far but your list is decent. No Dizzee Ras though?

13. J to the A.A.P. Says:

Uh… As for hiphop albums, the none hiphop albums I already mentioned…

By the way Riz, how would Kweli’s latest rate in that list?

14. DJ Vanish Says:

big props for puttin the white stripes on that list

15. Rizoh Says:

By the way Riz, how would Kweli’s latest rate in that list?

It’ll probably make my year-end list, but I left it off because it’s yet to hit stores. I basically stuck to albums that have been officially released, not bootlegged.

16. jay smooth Says:

I’m into the feist, no doubt

17. CommishCH Says:

excellent list. I’d have Sean P up high as well. Probably include KRS somewhere and find room for the underground with Senim Silla and Buff1.
One.
