When is it OK to Snitch?

killer-mike.jpg
Four months ago, Cameron Giles went on 360 and told Andersoon Cooper that he would never snitch on a criminal even if it was a serial killer that lived next door. (Let’s not get into why mainstream media always picks smart rappers like Cam to represent the hip-hop community on these issues.) After the Smoking Gun uncovered evidence of Cam’s own snitching history, Killa Cam did a 180 on his earlier stance on snitching and apologized for his ignorance.

Below, Killer Mike–one rapper who’s both talented and intelligent–weighs in on the issue of snitching. Do you agree with him?

When is it right to save your ass?

The way i was taught growing up was that snitching was a rule put in place by illegal hustlers/thugs to protect them from one another therefore seperating the streets and law enforecement. with that said it’s a rule to be followed by those in the streets not a whole community of people. The only reason witnesses in the community don’t snitch is beacuse of FEAR, of the said person having his comrades strike out and hurt(most times kill)them or their family members. And with witness proctection only lasting 6-8 months in some cases, it really only reinforces those with valueble info. to stay quiet.

But Killer Mike was right there is a strong difference between snitches and witnesses. A snitch is someone with involvment in an illegal activity gets caught and then squeals on others to protect his own neck. A witness on the other hand is just that, a witness to an illegal activity and is being a good citizen by reporting it and cooperating with the law.

i actually agree with what mike has to say. im not down with snitching, but then again, im not in those situations. people need to realize the diff. between a snitch and a witness…

3. Donny F Says:

One of the very few people that are telling the truth about what snitchin’ really is. When I had to re-educated one of my good friend’s 9 year old daughter on this subject, I knew this shit was way beyond getting out of hand.

4. Southern Soverign Says:

^^^ that’s what i fear for younger kids, is that they’re getting the wrong impression of what snitching and witnessing is. And in turn, decent black and latino communities suffer from ignorance, beacuse noone sits them down and tells them the difference.

5. Dann Says:

“proverbial 360″…I think you mean 180…cuz, 360 gets u right back to where u were…

6. Rizoh Says:

^^Silly me. Thanks for pointing that out.

7. Uber Snitch Says:

I snitch for any thing the little things, if a guy beats up another guy, police ask me to snitch I will. If somebody rapes a girl i snitch.

If people do things that arn’t allowd you should snitch, there’s a reason that it’s not allowd.

8. Vizion Says:

Mike’s got a point…too many cats get caught up in the ’snitchin’ epidemic.
