Kanye occasionally falls under a category I like to call “green rappers.” Not because his money is longer than a stretch of Texas highway, but because he recycles more rhymes than the average rapper. Anyone remember the “Hater n***as marry hater b*tches and have hater kids…” rhyme from a mixtape freestyle that found its way onto “Bring Me Down”? Or the “people talk so much sh*t about me at the barbershop that they forget to get their hair cut…” line from “Is That Your Car” that wound up on “Everything I Am.”?
Similarly, “Home Coming” (with John Legend) appeared on a pre-College Dropout mixtape back in 2003. The same song, now starring Coldplay’s Chris Martin and a new beat, resurfaced on this year’s Graduation.
Ye figured that not too many people knew about the original song. Plus, he already told Jay he did a song with Coldplay.
Compare both tracks and let me know which version you prefer.

Yo, I love the version with Legend because it’s so much more soulful. I read an interview where he talked about these lyrics and why he used them again. It’s a dope song and the concept is crazy with the metaphors, it needed to be on an official album, so I don’t blame him for that, but I wish he used the original.
The old version has got soul and fits the rhymes better, but I gotta admit that the new version with Chris Martin has a sick beat and the piano in it is dope.
“Coming Home” definitely. There’s so much soul in it (word to Ali).
And I hate it when Kanye - and other rappers - recycle lyrics. That’s the reason I hated on “Bring Me Down” from Late Registration cos he was spittin the same lyrics he had on “I See Now” wit Little Brother and Consequence. He needs to come with as many lyrics as he can beats!
The first version is the better version…’ye has taken a ton of those mixtape rhymes and put ‘em on his full length lps since he got in the game. lazy emceeing
I’m in a bit of a haze because I just hopped out of bed so I can’t remember the song titles but I’ve heard Kanye rap about dykes and Klondikes more than a few times as well.
100 times over Homecoming is superior. His flow on it is better, the beat is magic fire. And while Legend is a great singer, Chris Martin provides a sense of nostalgia instead of a sense of regret - and that’s what this song is about. It’s not just about soul, it’s about pride, and while Coming Home doesn’t have Homecoming does.
When I hear mixtape rhymes appear on different arrangements on the official albums, it’s just like the mixtape version was a demo or an earlier version. I don’t mind it much. That said, the John Legend version is really damn good. Although I like the Chris Martin one as well. Different takes. Different emotions.
ef coldplay. that play is cold nobody wants to hear that. kanye shoulda stopped after college dropout and stcuk to producing and uest appearing like his boy to t-pain
WOOW THAT WAS AN ON POINT ARTICLE CAUSE I FGURED IT OUT TOO, KANYE RECYCLE TONS OF SHIT…3OUTTA4 FR THE BEST BUT ”COMING HOME” IS CLARL SUPERIOR PRDUCTION WISE THAN THE FORCED COLLAB WITH CHIRS…HOMECOMING IS NICE, DONT GET IT TWISTED BUT COMING HOME IS REALLY A KANYE WEST BEAT WE LOVE TO LOVE MORE THAN SOME EXPERIMETAL SLASH RCYCLED THING OF HIS…
IN THE LISTENING SESSION OFGRADUATION, WEST SAID THAT COMING HOME WOULDNT ROCK STADUIMS SO HE SWITCHED THE BEAT(GOOOOSHH WHAT A MAJOR ERROR)AND THAT THE LYRICS ON IT WERE SO GOOD THAT HE HAD TO RECYCLE ‘EM WOOW!
Ye and Legend just need to redo this now and it would be sick. But he did the right thing putting Homecoming on the album. Coming Home doesn’t fit sonically (even though it’s the better version.)
Coming home is nice, but I dont understand how U can compare with Homecoming…this is an amazing song, its in my top 5 of the Graduation album, its fire!!!
the best would be john legend singing exactly what chris martin is. the beat on the new one is so good but john legend is so much better than chris martin
the old one has heart, but honestly people, lets go for the tailored look of homecoming instead of the t-shirt and jeans of Coming home. The voice in the original sample gets annoying and honestly the elton jon sample of homecoming os alot smoother and alot more sophisticated, than the original. Time to step ya taste up. Homecoming all day.
