Busta Blames the Current State of Hip-Hop on Computers

During an Aftermath studio session, Busta launched a tirade against all things internet, blaming new innovations like mp3s and YouTube for hip-hop’s current state. He also points out that ringtones are now valued over singles, as evidenced by the respective price tags (”Ringtones cost $3.00; Songs cost $0.99).

Yeah, let’s blame it on the big, bad computer geeks, who came and took all my money away…waaah! waaah!!

Does Busta have a point or is he hating on the ringtone hustle?

I was watching Cube’s “Today Was a Good Day” video with my wife, I got to thinking. Back in the day, when all we had was the box, etc. we looked forward to new music/ new material. Everything today is instantly accessible, now there is really no anticipation.

‘Do you listen to music or do you just skimm trough it ?’ – Jay z

Video killed the radiostar -> Internet killed all

But it also depends on the consumer’s caracter. Do you love music ? would you buy an album ? do you recognize the real ?

I agree with Busta…..but you also have point the finger at the artist, labels and 80% of the mixtape so caled djs. When you spend your money on albums that are only 30%-50% good because an artist isn’t totally foucused on his project (even though they swear this is their greatest ever), only to find out you could’ve spent your money on sonething else. I’ve been caught and I’m pretty sure most of you have felt robbed by so so albums you purchused to the point where now you question everyone’s great new album. I still buy cds and records…..just not the same amount I used to. It’s goes much deeper than what busta’s saying.

blaming technology for the current state of hip-hop is ridiculous. things evolve, not just technology, but consumer habits and behavior. so blaming anything is just not a very well thought out. i think the only way to find decent hip-hop these days is by sifting through cyberspace cause these rap artists these days are putting out wack shit. busta’s last album was wack shit so it’s understandable that he’s wildin’ out at the internet. he’s wrong, there’s good music out there for those who want it.

fuckouttahere busta. you rehash the same ass boring formula every year.

11. Ivan Says:

Am I really gonna have to be the first person to make a “Busta’s Lament” mention?

LOL

Anyways, I think Bussa Buss is right, although I wouldn’t say Hip-Hop’s downfall is due to computers. Rather, I’d say it’s due to the core of capitalism: putting the dollar sign above your heart, soul and mind.

We need more Biz Markies, Slick Ricks, Big Daddy Kanes, Rakims, MC Lytes and so on…

12. Specter Says:

Nah, this is dumb. “sooch” is the only one who has it right. Blaming computers and ringtones for hip hop today is way off point. He should be smarter than that.

13. T2 Says:

I agree wit Busta cus I brought cds every week. But ever since i got my ipod I resulted to downloading cus I only wanted the best track off the album rather than the whole cd.

The only cds I have brought since are coincidently Busta’s big bang, Jay’s album, T.I. King album, Mobb Deep and Ghostface.

14. Ryan Says:

I think thats true whats busta is saying. For the fact that is easier to get to everything and become your own star. Rapper work harder to make a song thats a hot ringtone instead the best shit possible. Plus it’s more of a hustle than art.

15. Bman Says:

one thing hiphop (and music in general) might try in North America is to adopt the japanese system where bands put out 2-4 song LPs out every 4 months or so…
might help spread out the music and force musicians to cut down on filler.

16. J to the AAP Says:

If y’all agree with Buss than you should log off en kick out the computer, you’re killing HipHop.
Get real people, I’m definitely with sooch on this one. Technology isn’t killing HipHop, wackness is.

That beig said, the ringtone hustle does suck donkeyballs and for me it’s albums > ringtones/singles anyday. There may be less anticipation nowadays but artists can shape their own career more easily too. Radio+MTV’s stronghold isn’t that strong anymore, I have no problem with that. It’s got plusses and minuses, but just make good music and they’re will still be an audience for it.

17. J to the AAP Says:

they’re=there, obviously.

why have a 4 million dollar budget. i really don’t believe it should cost that damn much. you got the internet where u can find great up and coming producers that will sell a beat for less than a thousand bucks. 20 songs will cost less than 20 thousand. i’m sure most these artist have acess to big time studio equipment and they might have to pay for the promotions, studio time, publishing rights, editing and mastering. i’m sure that should be under 250 thousand. so i’m sure u can make great music without spending 4 million to do it. soulja boy crank dat superman is hot right now thankz to the internet hes a star and got money. he starated off with myspace and youtube so the internet has hurt, but also made lotta new stars. artist can also put out their own mixtapes and make 8 bucks a album. thats 8 thousand per 1000 sold and thats strickly the artist money not their record companys money. acording to lil flip they only get paid for 11 songs on a retail album.

22. Nils Says:

OK OK computers aren’t the only reason, i also agree on the ‘wackness’argument.
But I mean , I don’t really buy new cd’s anymore. I download ‘em, and the one’s i buy are classics. ( Ready to die, illmatic, reasonable doubt,…).
I aint gonna fuckin spend money on a lame ass Curtis album. ya diiiiiggg

23. was u saying something? Says:

Busta knows hes wrong blaming technology. Technology has created more than its destroyed. Alot of muthafuckas wouldnt be producing right now if technology didnt allow for anyone with alittle money and alittle talent to start producing(and recording) in their own cribs.

I LOVE Busta to death. And its strange hes talkin this talk cause hes one of the FEW cats who have always adapted and changed and remained relevant all these years!

QTip did an awesome interview speaking on technolog. I read it recently. Will try to find the link. Unlike Busta he sees technology as a blessing and embraces it. Which I think all artists and music lovers should do.

24. rg Says:

i think busta is on point with this. seriously, before computers, people were up on their vcrs and radio ready to record a new joint onto a cassette or a vcr. now, if you miss a premiere of a new joint, no worries, you can download it online and have it easily accessible to you forever.

sooch said: i think the only way to find decent hip-hop these days is by sifting through cyberspace cause these rap artists these days are putting out wack shit.

in all honesty, i don’t WANT to be wasting my time sifting through cyberspace because rappers be putting out wack shit. without the advanced technology of the computer and the internet, record labels wouldn’t be signing wack artists just off of youtube or soundclick hype. artists probably ain’t even grindin’ as hard as they were before the computer and internet, and i think that, in general, has hurt the industry more than it’s helped it.

labels are too concerned with the quantity of product that’s being put out instead of the quality. having technology that makes rap and hip hop easily accesible is like eminem signing 50 cent; it’s the best and worst thing that’s happened to the respective party.

25. Understanding Says:

I think Busta’s hatin’. Look at Kanye and 50’s record sales even if part of their sales were generated by a staged beef. So what? It was good 4 hip-hop and when the smoke cleared Kanye had done like a mill in his first week and 50 did what seven-fifty? eight hundred? Justin Timberlake’s album came out last year and STILL has joints bangin’ on the radio!!!

Plus look at R & B artist Tamia. She released her last joint independently and the last I heard she had sold like two hundred thousand copies which 4 an independant release is craaaazy.

Busta’ concentrated more on buying jewelry and other stereotypical, unneccessary “Look At Me I’m A Flashy Negro” type sh*t rather than the album and it flopped. Plus 4 some inexplicable reason he didn’t release even one of the joints that Dre’ produced. Not even one dawg? What the f**k was HE thinkin’?

26. versaiking Says:

Lots of things have contributed to records selling as huge as they use to. Creativity is for sure one but one of the main things is the internet and the easy accessability of music through it. Why buy an album when you can download it or listen to it on streaming sites all day? Kanye did about a mil first week true, but look at the sales since. Graduation probably won’t even outsale Late registration (2.5 mil) in the end.

27. sabotage Says:

i’m sick and tired of artists blaming the state of hip hop (and the music industry in general) on the internet! maybe if yall so called artists actually made a GOOD ALBUM that is worth the money, you wont have to worry about downloading, dumb ass! the industry talks about people who download music for free on the net are “ripping off the artists and labels”. WHAT!!! first of all, anybody who’s ripping off artists IS the record labels by making big money off of albums, while in most cases, the artist barely make any dollars. second, the industry been ripping off fans for years! i bought plenty of albums over the years, and some were good, but most of them were wack as hell!!! that’s why i dont buy albums that much anymore, unless i heard some of the album(not just the single)in advance and its good. the problem is internet, its imbalance! the commercial radio and t.v. plays the same songs to death! people think hip hop is what they see on tv, when there is much more to hip-hop than what the capitalists decide to show on the regular.

28. kp of blood inc. Says:

I’ve got to agree wit Busta. I was 17 when I began making my own beatz, recording my own songs, designing my own cd covers, and running my own marketing group. I did this all with a PC, a closet, mxl mic, and a pro tools le recording system. The game has totally changed. I clear, roughly, 35 g’s by selling 5000 copies of my own shit @ 7 bucks a piece. Back then I did the shit cause I didn’t have the money to spend on studio time, so I made my own studio. I feel you Bus…,but things will never be the same.

30. Nikki Says:

Hip hop is growing up. Computers aren’t going anywhere. If he were a real artist, he wouldn’t care how much money he was making or not making; he’d be making music. He and his music would be evolving with the change in medium (the internet).

31. rawr Says:

busta is wrong bc hes one of the ones that sold out lol!!!!! and no i learned a shit tone of underground real hip hop artist because of the computer.
