Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool: Cast of Characters Revealed

the-cool.jpg

Lupe Fiasco’s second go-round, The Cool, features an interesting character that was introduced on Food & Liquor. The Cool is a character that was ushered in on the Kanye-produced track of the same name. His last statement on the aforementioned song, “Hustler for death, no heaven for a gangster” left people wondering what happened afterwards. So, Lupe decided to expand on the story. He also built some additional characters around him, including The Game (not you, JT), Michael Young, and The Streets. Child Rebel Soldier has the breakdown of all the characters:

Michael Young History
Born: March 2006
Birthplace: Every Hood, USA

Biography: Since his early childhood days, Michael Young History was conflicted. Raised by a single, hard-working mother, History never really knew his father, a man who abandoned both History and his baby sister. This lack of paternal guidance turned an otherwise intelligent, promising boy into a drug-selling, money-grubbing Scarface-wannabe. Starting off as merely a petty crook, History’s torrid affair with his mentor’s (Game) wife, The Streets, sent him on a downward spiral of greed, deception, and, ultimately, death.

Cool Point
- An unabashed atheist, History anointed his own “holy trinity”—himself, Streets and The Cool.

The Cool
Resurrected: Amongst the undead since September 2006
Birthplace: Six feet under the Earth’s surface

Biography: The Cool is the physical manifestation of History’s debt to humanity. Payback for every user abused and every family torn apart by History, The Cool walks amongst the living as a zombie. “He” – that term used lightly, considering The Cool isn’t human – reeks of death, an ironic contrast to his polished three-piece-suit appearance. Searching for his purpose, The Cool haunts The Streets.

Cool Points
- His only possessions—two diamond earrings, a gold chain, and a letter from History’s eight-year-old sister.
- Despite the long-finished settling of rigor mortis, the sharp sensation of three bullets constantly causes aching in The Cool.
- Only one thought plays in his head like a broken record – “Hustler for death, no heaven for a gangster.”

In case you missed it, Michael Young is raised by The Streets and grows up to be The Cool. Damn, sitting here dissecting this stuff makes me feel like a nerd.

Go read the rest at Child Rebel Soldier.

I read this shit earlier, i think it’s a crazy concept to have going throughout his music i had to go back and re-listen to some of his shit and watch that “Superstar” video.

hmm Interesting but I dont understand where you inferred your conclusions from? Call me a retard..but based on the characters you revealed …I assumed Michael was raised by History, and then went to fuck with the Streets (or got seduced and fucked by the streets depending on your perspective but you get the idea) And well, the cool is i dunno , sorta the inevitable calamity and misfortune that falls upon those who fuck with the streets?? Stop making me think dammit!

4. Rizoh Says:

The Streets is the single mother who raised Michael. Don’t confuse The Streets with History.

5. khal Says:

something about lupe i just can’t get into.

6. J to the AAP Says:

Might be a bit pretentious but if someone can make it work it’s Lupe, it’ll at least be interesting to see him run with this.

7. Rizoh Says:

I think he’s limiting the concept to 5 songs, so it might work.

8. Mr.White Says:

This gonna be a dope ass album bitches! If not , dumb it down !

9. Flint Says:

Yeah, I’ve heard this album and seen the album art that expands on all the storytelling. DOPE. Big, dark, grandiose production - strings and thunderstorms all over the place. And Lupe just rhymes his ass off. The concept is used in limited quantity so there’s a skit and three or four songs that deal with the characters in detail while the rest of the tracks are about whatever they are about and only obliquely reference the characters.

And Rizoh didn’t make many conclusions in this post. All that stuff is directly from the CRS site. Y’all gonna need to pay a whole lot closer attention to get all the shit going on in this album. Can’t wait to get my hands on it for real though, that shit is off the wall.

I Was Listening 2 That Song And Nerely Fell Out My Chair When I Opened The Cd Case And Seen That Name. On Food And Liquor The Cool Was 1 Of The Best Songs On That Cd And 2 Kno He Went Further With This Character And Made It Into A Song Soley For Him Is Genuis. I Believe It Maybe His Alter Ego, Like Janet Jackson And Damita Jo.
