New Study: Blogs Boost Album Sales

riaasales-projection.jpg

Not surprisingly, blogs help boost album sales in a way that not even MySpace can. A study by New York University researchers found that being mentioned in a legitimate blog, like The Rap Up, improves album sales up to six times the average.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

NYU Stern professor Vasant Dhar and former student Elaine Chang sampled 108 albums released between January and March of 2007 to determine the impact of blog chatter on record sales. Using Amazon.com sales rankings, albums were tracked four weeks before and four weeks after release. Researchers found that when an album got mention in more than 40 legitimate blog posts, sales were three times the average. If those albums were associated with major labels, sales jumped five times the average. Albums that got more than 250 blog mentions saw sales increases of six times the average.

Just what I needed to jumpstart my week in a good mood.

But… but.. I thought the internet was evil? The record companies told me that websites ate their baby!

This study is nonsense, album that are discussed on blogs are albums that have spotlights on, the buzz grows as the presence on blogs grows, so they sell more.

If tomorrow I do a crappy mixtape it won’t sell 3 times more because 40 blogs talk about it.

If I do a records with Jay-Z and 50cent, the sells will grow with or without blogs.

^ … you’re dumb, you can’t tell me Little brother isn’t feeling a little extra cash from that proof of purchase at TSS. People who are buying albums these days want good ones, if the kanye-50 thing wasnt on blast all over the blogs do you think 50, or kanye, would have sold nearly as much?

Yo, Rizoh you’re one brilliant dude. I know for sure that I have helped countless independent acts get the word out on HipHopRuckus that a lot of blogs didn’t bother to post. I didn’t see one dime, just take take take. But hey, it’s def. a conversation piece.

^Thanks for the flattery. I don’t know that I deserve it though.

As for indie acts, I do plug them a lot (more often than not the dope ones) and I’m glad to see you’re doing the same.

yeah this is the ol’ news media bastardization of correlations by trying to assign them a direction. Blog posts –> Successful albums? Maybe it’s amazing albums –> blog posts. It is interesting that there was no correlation for “affiliation” alone… pretty interesting considering we live in a world with more acquaintances and affiliations that ever before.

i also find that indie acts are a lot quicker to show love to bloggers. like they realize how much the ‘net can do for them, and are quick to show love to a cat who does an interview or even posts a free tune from their project. its nice to see artists truly embrace what a blog can do for them.

I’m sorry Rapup, but I am laughing out loud … I’ve seem some amusing instances of blogger types appearing to act a little overly self-important, but this one TAKES THE CAKE.

The chart is the funniest. So digital sales are flat right now, but in 2010 they’ll begin an to rise rapidly? Because of blogs? And this is all proven in ONE 130-word article? HAAAAA!!!!!!!

Ok, forget that for just one moment and consider one little thing, a question the Savior Bloggers maybe forgot to consider. Is there anything in the article that says the popular albums in the 108 they sampled got popular because of blogs? Maybe, just maybe, the blogs were talking about them for the same reason people were buying them? Because they’re good albums with buzz. No, bloggers wouldn’t want to consider that possibility, even though it’s … common sense. it would mean that blogs are not the center of the universe.
