Jena 6 the Movie

jena-6.jpg

This documentary reeks of shameless blaxploitation.

Two nooses are left as a warning to black students trying to integrate their playground, fights break out across town, a white man pulls a shotgun on black students, someone burns down most of the school, the DA puts six black students on trial for attempted murder, and the quiet town of Jena becomes the site of the largest civil rights demonstration in the South since the 1960s. ‘The Jena 6′ is the story of hidden racial inequality and violence becoming visible. It is a powerful symbol for, and example of, how racial justice works in America - where the lynching noose has been replaced by the DA’s pen.

I’m all for racial equality, but the mentality of treating every black victim like Nelson Mandela has to stop. Take it from someone who vigorously campaigned for color-blind application of justice in the Jena 6 case, before CNN ever said a word about it.

i feel ya, Riz. especially considering their actions after being brought in the national spotlight.

True story you said Riz. I too feel very uncomfy with this commodification of the Jena 6 issue. The fact of the matter is the kids were wrong for beating and dang near killing the white dude in question. Two wrongs don’t make a right as much as the treatment was unfair across the board.

Jena 6 was some messed up sh!t but damn , a movie?

4. Purpose Says:

Actually, I cant agree with that.

The fact that they are imperfect messengers for racial equality in the justice system
doesn’t change the fact that race was a huge factor in the application of justice in Jena. That glaring problem remains despite how ignorant the kids have acted in the aftermath.

Despite the fact that they were wrong for beating down the white kid, the following facts remain unchanged:

- The white kids who hung the noose were not expelled.

- a white male involved in a later altercation with some of the black students was only charged with simple battery.

- the white kid who pulled a gun on some of the black kids in town was not charged with any criminal offenses. In fact, the only people charged were the black kids who took the gun from the other kid during the altercation. The black kids was charged with theft offenses.

- The 6 were in fact expelled, although at least one has since been allowed to re-enroll. Further they were charged with second degree attempted murder.

I know nothing about the video, so I cant comment on that. But the issues raised by this case are no less important today. Unfortunately, by their actions, these kids have scuttled a good oppty to have a real conversation about race and the justice system.

Who cares? Big deal? Amazing.., I found brintey spears had a personal account on
SeekRich. com. It is a site for celebrities and millionaires to mingle. It’s said Charlie Sheen has found his love there last May.

6. moneda Says:

There was one witness who could actually verify who beat that white boy’s ass. The coach at the school who was there at the time. The one and only adult who could actually see the fight? Do you know what he said on the stand? Not one of the black students charged did what they were accused of. Yet… here we are. You niggas keep speculating about what went down (and is going down) in Jena. You’re being a big help… really…

7. Rukus Says:

Its sad how often the race card is pulled in these different situations. When it comes time to actually fight for someone who deserves the time and energy, then nobody takes it seriously.
I feel you Rizoh…its a question of fighting tooth and nail for every single thing that even sounds like injustice, and then cowering away and not admitting fault when we’re not right.

That Duke rape case had a stripper looking like the Black Virgin Mary for a couple of weeks before all the evidence came out. We should fight for fair trial, we should fight for equal rights, but we probably shouldn’t be so quick to play the role of judge and jury without all the facts in front of us…

Hey, I love the body fitted sports.Welcome to view my crazy hot photos at mixedfriends.com by searching ’sunnysmile’, I am looking for a hot black man..

9. Purpose Says:

All I can say is that many of the facts remain - the system was not fair and equal in this instance.

No the kids should not be held up as mandela. But that should not detract from the larger issue at hand. Instead of dealing with the larger issue, we focus on individual shortcomings.

The Duke rape case was very different. Completely different circumstance because the allegations were false. The allegations of racial influence in the actions of the justice system in Jena remain. That is the issue.

Are they going to inculcate the “money in the mouth” pictures that surfaced on Myspace last year into this travesty? We don’t need to relive this whole thing again. I won’t be tuning in.
