Atmosphere Make[s] History with ‘Lemons’

When I praised Atmosphere’s When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold as the year’s best rap album, hardly did I expect anyone to agree with me. I was simply following my conviction. If anything, I expected chants of “Emo! Emo!!” or something to that effect. Turns out 35,000 others echoed my sentiments.
According to Billboard, Lemons has set a new first-week sales record for Rhymesayers Entertainment.
Hip-hop artist Atmosphere easily scores his best sales and chart week ever as “When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold” (Rhymesayers) starts at No. 5 with 36,000. His previous charting high-water mark came from 2005’s “You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having,” which peaked at No. 66. “When Life…” also becomes the highest-charting album for the Rhymesayers label; the previous best was, again, Atmosphere’s stop at No. 66.
Yeah, you read that right. Billboard just addressed Atmosphere as an individual. Funny stuff.

Dr. Dope Says:
that is awesome for them. i am a big atmosphere / rhymesayers fan and this cd is still growing on me. i haven’t taken the time to sit and listen indepth to each song to grasp the concepts and messages but it does seem like a very good cd.

No hate, but 35,000 would have been pretty weak 5 years ago… Guess NOBODY’s buying albums any more. The music industry needs to step up its game.

Not really bro these cats are on there own label which means there caking hard.As a whole rhyme sayers have pushed well over 500,000 units for all releases.

Rizoh Says:
James, 35K in one week for an indy release is pretty remarkable. Most indy albums don’t even sell 35K in one year.

James Says:
Right, I recognize that those numbers are big for an indie label, but the industry as a whole is in a huge slump if those numbers are near the top of the chart.

Rizoh Says:
^You’re right, last week was pretty weak.

So, confession time: I’ve never listened to Atmosphere. Where should I start? What should I save for last?

Rizoh Says:
^Start with Seven’s Travels and then go grab You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having. The new one is their best though, so you’re going to need that as well.

Thanks Riz. I’ll grab em this weekend.

Jonathon Gosman Says:
To the idiot who thinks 35,000 is not a lot…. What u need to understand is that it is INDEPENDENT sales! Indie artists sell way less units but make substantially more on each unit sold. Plus they don’t have some wack A&R or Corporate Label telling them what to say! Thay make a large sum of their income touring non-stop as well…. Which means they are usually very good live cause they perform so much! Basically…. everyone at rhymesayers is probably doing way better financially than all these wack ass ACTORS that are signed to a major bragging about all of their possesions!

Rizoh Says:
He wasn’t saying 35k is not enough. I think the point he was making is that for 35k (by any artist major or indie) to be No.5 that week, it must have been a bad week for everybody. That’s a legitimate point.

Thadeacon Says:
Who cares? 35k, platinum… the album is the best I’ve heard this year when it comes to a complete and versatile hip hop joint. EMC was dope, but doesn’t go off the edge for the MC’s involved. They pretty much stayed in their respective boxes, and all the skits got a little annoying toward the end to me… but I would agree it’s in my top 5 for the year… Let it be known there is not ONE guest appearance on “When Life Gives You…”, which is unheard of these days. Atmosphere carries the whole album and puts us in shoes of many individuals throughout. I consider it a classic.

And by Atmosphere I mean both Slug and ANT carry the whole album… lol
