Devin the Dude’s Greatest Hits

Devin the Dude – Doobie Ashtray (prod. by DJ Premier)

I’m not the type to go coco loco over anyone’s Greatest Hits (no, not even Biggie’s). For the most part, a Greatest Hits CD is a random assortment of singles or popular songs packaged by the label. The problem with this approach is that popularity doesn’t always equate greatness. That said, you can’t go wrong with a Devin the Dude compilation no matter how you sort it. This one includes tracks all the way from his first album to his recent instaclassic “What a Job.” My only gripe with this Greatest Hits is that it’s missing my favorite Devin/DJ Premier collabo, “Doobie Ashtray.”

If you’ve been sleeping on Devin Copeland for the past 10 years, here’s a chance for you to get familiar with hip-hop’s #1 court jester.

Peep game.

Am I the only one that has noticed that when artists leave their labels or are about to the labels in question drop these compilation albums?

I don’t blame them. rap-a-lot did a lot for Devin. and i’m sure they the rights to do so anyway. in this case there is foul play

@ esbee

I would think that they’re usually trying to recoup some cash off an artist before the artist is gone. Usually its better for the label when the artist has already left and is creating some kind of buzz on their own, so they can capitalize off of that and they’ll garner more interest for the compilation. In Devin’s case, he’s a bit more underground, but this actually might work out well for fans such of Devin like myself who aren’t die-hard enough to have his entire works, but definitely love the standouts on various albums.
