Nas Loses the ‘Nigger’ Battle

nasir.jpg

The men in suit finally convinced Nas to drop that cockamamie idea of naming his album Nigger. The newly christened album, Nas, is still scheduled for July 1st.

“It’s important to me that this album gets to the fans,” the rapper says. “It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It’s that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it.”

So much for detoxifying the N-Word.

It will forever be the “N” album.

Why doesn’t he just call it the N-word or the N album still? This is somewhat sad yet funny…’cos Nas was saying the title would remain, I wonder how they were able to convince him. I guess even Nas can’t all the way do what he wants to do..

5. UNDERSTANDING Says:

I was actually looking 4ward 2 seeing if the Def Jam suits would give dude that much creative control but no I see that the answer is no.

Kinda hypocritical in my opinion. I mean they’ll let black man spit the words NI**ER, B**CH and Hoe and all over 14, 16, 18 tracks. They’ll let a cat talk about bustin’ caps in another ni**a’s a** and leavin his body cold and filled with bullet holes but nope … can’t call an album NIGGER. Now all all of sudden record companies stand 4 something? Who knew?

My boy NaS is lettin’ me down big time. I know he’s got pressure on him to sell discs, but I feel like the album loses some of its significance without the original title. I hope he brings it for real…the material has gotta be better than “Be A Nigger Too” if he really wants to make a statement.

Oh, btw, I’m waiting on that NaS and Premo disc too, although I’m definitely not holding my breath!

ok. I doubted nas one time and he dropped stillmatic, you should probably go listen to that album. It is gonna be a album from Nasir Jones- thats all I care about.

“ok. I doubted nas one time and he dropped stillmatic.”

Stillmatic is way overrated imho, God’s Son was better, alongside certified banger ‘Made You Look’ it had personal ish to say and some dramatic weight besides beefing with other dudes.

Anyway, Sorry to see Nas losing his absolute creative control like that. It’s probably just Def Jam backing out of all those potential lawsuits. They could win ‘em but it would take an incredibly long time to make a profit of the album with all those legal fees. They’re still a company after all.

9. moneda Says:

Who could possibly bring a lawsuit against Def Jam pertaining to the name of this album that would even see a day in court? It’s about marketability, just like everything else in music. “Nigger” is not as marketable as “NaS,” so they probably told him they’d push the release again (and again) until he folded. He wants the album out, I assume, she he caved on the title.

10. J to the AAP Says:

@moneda: Weren’t there organizations threatening to sue Def Jam for racism or defamation or something to that degree? I don’t think they could possibly win but anybody can file a lawsuit, and with high profile people and race issues involved? There have been courtcases for way less.
As far as marketability, with all the free press it’s gotten it looks pretty damn marketable to me. Istant headlines, controversy sells. You might be right on account of stores refusing to stock an album with such a title though. Maybe Def Jam decided to ride out the controversy/hype as long as they could and back out at the last moment. You know, a have the cake and eat it too kinda situation.
