Nas: “I missed my mark with Hip-Hop Is Dead

Nas

Nas has been giving us plenty to yap about lately, since he has an album to promote.
First he tells Rolling Stone magazine that he used to smoke weed with his old man when he was only 9. Now, he’s opening up about the impact his last album had on the likes of Lil Wayne.

Nas on Hip-Hop Is Dead:

“I heard that I kind of missed the mark with that album. I can agree a little bit. Musically, yes, but the statement has done more than I ever would have imagined. Lil Wayne’s whole thing is to prove that hip-hop is not dead. I would have never known that my album would affect Lil Wayne. I’m amazied and I’m so overjoyed by that shit. So any artists have addressed my statement that I know I didn’t miss my mark.” [via Billboard magazine, 7/5/08]

I absolutely agree with Nas on this one. Inasmuch as I enjoyed the concept and lyrics on Hip-Hop Is Dead, the production was clearly uneven. But that’s not news to Nas fans. He simply hasn’t been able to string together a musically consistent album in 6 years. Thankfully, he was able to rectify his “production problem” on the new, untitled album. Frankly, I need at least 3 more days to form an early opinion on that album, but I can tell that they made an effort to ensure musical continuity this time. If this doesn’t make you go, “Ahh, finally a Nas album that doesn’t suck on the production end,” then nothing will. Let’s face it, that collaborative album with DJ Premier will never happen.

Sidebar: I won’t be posting any tracks from Untitled. Not to knock those who do, but I’m not interested in polluting the listening experience for you. Do yourself a favor and go listen to the album in its entirety. You’ll get a better perspective that way.

That “mismatch” of an album seemed much of a success than this one. HHID did get good reviews and decent sales (800k) even a grammy nod.

While N!gger and the concept was great in principle and the mixtape and floating non-albums tracks were great, the final product feels understated and the lack of promo is suprising.

uneven production to me trumps the understated production of the new joint.

agree riz, i stopped listening to nas tracks till i cop the album in full so i can hear it beginning to end, which i cannot wait to do :D

as a side note- more rappers have used the line “hip hop aint dead because im alive and rapping” than any other line in rap history ;)

Listened to “Untitled” twice through so far. Diggin’ it, for sure, though the “Can’t Stop Us Now” sample so soon after that RZA track took some getting used to.

Definitely some bangers though – Make the World Go Round’, America,Farrakhan, Y’all My niggas, Sly Fox and Fried Chicken, all great.

Anyway, I don’t know that I like it more than HHID, but it’s solid.

I know I might get burned for this, but I loved that 30’s detective-type title track off HHID. The concept / lyrics were great.

Why would you get burned for that? That was one of the better songs on HHID.

no premo and nas?! noooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooooooooo
ooo =(

Who wants to still hear Premo and Nas in 2008?!

Premo’s my dude but he hasn’t done anything close to the tracks that made him a production legend in years.

Anyone who think a collab with him is what’s gonna bring Nas back to some mythical place they think he strayed from after Illmatic, you’re sadly deluded. And BTW: I actually think HHID and Street’s Disciple were both good albums (although I’ll concede that the latter was a little bloated and probably could’ve been elevated to great status if it had been trimmed down to a single disc).

11. fakts Says:

His last musically consistent album was 6 years ago?? Try a decade-and-a-half ago.

Forget Premo. A 9th Wonder collabo would be a match made.

Last I checked, Premo was still relevant to a lot of heads, hip-hop or otherwise. It’s safe to say that this collabo is still in great demand.
