Q-Tip: “Technology Killed Hip-Hop”

Q Tip
In today’s episode of Famous People’s Favorite Excuses, Q-Tip joins the army of MCs indirectly calling for a moratorium on technological advancements. According to the legendary Tip, Internets and other technologies like the comment box should be held responsible for hip-hop’s demise.

Here’s what Tip said in the August issue of Spin magazine:
“I think it’s a shame, because everyone becomes a critic. You see something at the bottom of everything that says, “What’s your comment?” And everyone has to offer their opinion and comment… To me, that drains the art. All of a sudden, the imagination just passes. Whereas predating the internet and predating videos, you had an active imagination. You would hear sounds and then get mental pictures of what these sounds felt like to you. It engaged you and made you more invested in it. It made you want to get tickets to the show, buy the album, put the poster on the wall. Now it’s sensory overload.”

Tip probably has a point, but I won’t believe it until Soulja Boy validates this shit. Let me explain. Soulja Boy is the only rapper worth listening to these days. If you’ve been paying attention you may have noticed that all his statements and predictions have been on point lately.

For instance, Soulja Boy once said Ice-T’s career was over. No one believed him until pictures of Ice attempting to retrieve fragments of his career from a trash can surfaced on the web.

Then Soulja Boy said he was the hottest MC in the game. And what happened afterward? 50 Cent embraced him. Kanye anointed him the 2nd coming of Nas.

So, I call bullshit on Q-Tip’s claim that technology killed hip-hop, unless Soulja Boy comes out and validates that claim.

In terms of money:

The Industry killed Hip-Hop.

If the industry would’ve tried to work with these torrent sites and shit. People could still be making money.

But the dumb ass industry tries to sue these sites, thinking no one will go on it anymore, when somewhere else.

In terms of Quality:

The consumers killed hip-hop. If people didn’t buy shit like souija boy, the industry wouldn’t try to make more like him. But the consumers EAT this shit UP.

Don’t buy it, and it’ll fade away. If you buy it, then the industry will assume theres a demand for it.

real hiphop is stil alive on the walls of any major and sometimes minor cities in americ and the rest of the world….if these rappers wouldnt distance themselves from real hiphop they would find that it is alive and well…chicago for instance the hiphop rappers on the underground share venues with writers djs and breakers….how it should be….

11. Dj Farmer Inda Dell Says:

old rappers complaining about changing times is making me lose faith in some of my favorites! wtf.

tip- everyone has,is,and will always have an opinion of this, and everything else. how does that drain the art exactly? somebody needs to toughen up, or go back to making dope records about how shitty their label treats them….

wheres the renaissance? kamaal the abstract??? and youre saying peoples opinions are killing hip-hop, f’kin whatever man. your label is killing YOUR art form, now THATS worth complaining about.

12. Purpose Says:

Gotta agree that this is nonsense on so many levels.

People were always critics, they just didn’t have as large a forum in which to disseminate their views.

Sensory overload might be true in terms of the amount of music currently out there, but how that killed the music is beyond me. Creativity will always exist. If it doesnt, the fault lies with the individuals who purport to do the creating. Not the means through which the creativity is distributed.
