Halftime Report: The Best Rap Albums, Mixtapes, and Songs of 2008 (So Far)

(The following entry is rife with lists and subjective statements. If you’re allergic to annotated recommendations, please consult your doctor before proceeding.)

Contrary to what critics would have you believe, there’s been plenty of good hip-hop music this year. From the rise of promising new acts like Reks and Mickey Factz to the resurgence of OGs like Nas and Bun B, it’s been an eventful year indeed.

With the first 7 months of 2008 now officially behind us, it’s time to take a closer look at the very best hip-hop albums*, songs, mixtapes, and collaborations of the year, so far. And let’s not forget the shitty ones.

Best Rap Albums of the First 7 Months

  • When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold (Atmosphere)
Having a bad week? Chug down this piece of optimism twice daily and you’re good to go. But beware, one man’s pill is another’s poison.

  • The Show (eMC) — Concept album done right.
  • II Trill (Bun B) — Witness this 35-year old MC’s growing pains and bow.
  • Each Dawn I Die (Little Vic) — Truly engaging from cover to outro.
  • Then What Happened? (J Live) — A stunning comeback from one of rap’s most creative voices.
  • Untitled (Nas) - An intellectually sizzling ride that embodies all the introspective expressionism and unabashedly biting commentary on issues that dominate our daily conversations.
  • I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II (Killer Mike) - Pure proof that rage is a virtue.

Mixtapes That Were Better Than Most Albums

Hip-Hopcentric Albums By Non-Rappers That Totally Rocked

  • The Odd Couple (Gnarls Barkley) — Second time’s the charm for this odd couple.

  • Hard Candy (Madonna) — MILF pop at its enticing best.
  • Third (Portishead) — Despite an 11-year hiatus, these trip-hop specialists still know how to rock an album.
  • Feed The Animals (Girl Talk) — Rejoice, Kanye. Pop art is very much alive.
  • New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (Erykah Badu) — Mama’s got a gun and she knows just how to use it. Bang!

Albums That Were OK But Could Have Been A Lot Better

  • Rising Down (The Roots) — Plays well as individual songs, but as an album this fell short.
  • Ode to the Ghetto (Guilty Simpson) — As grimy as the city that inspired it. I wanted more diversity though.
  • Ego Trippin’ (Snoop Dogg) — Loved the offkilter joints, but the ghostwriting was insultingly blatant.
  • HNIC 2 (Prodigy) — Affirms my argument that making sequels to a masterworks should be a no-no in hip-hop.

Albums By Female Rappers That Were Pushed Back Further Than Tyra Banks’ Hairline

  • Here I Am (Eve)
  • Koko B Ware (Kid Sister)
  • Block Party (Missy Elliott)

Albums That Fell Short of Hype And Still Received Glowing Reviews

  • Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne - Frankly, dude probably has a classic in him. Too bad the lean won’t let us hear it.
  • Nigger Nas Untitled - The hype was so monumental, so much so that people expected another Illmatic II. Which brings me to my next point. I’m only including this here for one reason: despite being one of the year’s best efforts, it wasn’t Illmatic good and that seems to be a crime if your name is Nas.

Yo Riz where the “Project Pat & Emile present A Kid named CuDi” mixtape, should be there for “Day & Night” alone. You pretty much right about the rest though.

2. smokeYYY Says:

No Elzhi - Europass mention? Criminal.

Chris Says:

T.I.’s “No Matter What” needs to be mentioned when talking bout best rap songs of 08, that’s the best song I’ve heard from Tip in quite awhile.

4.
Rizoh
Rizoh Says:

Chris, I agree. “No Matter What” was on my rough draft for this post and will definitely be mentioned in the top 10 by year end.

5. Hater Says:

Untitled was disappointing on the second listen. Nas just sounds like someone trying to sound smart and completely failing at it. I can’t rem what song it was but he said something about Nigger and Nigeria…I almost shat my pants at the utter stupidity of it.
Nas is a good rapper no doubt about it but he fails when he tries to be intellectual.

6.
Rizoh
Rizoh Says:

Yeah, that Nigger and Nigeria was embarrassing.

7. sooch Says:

I did not sleep on J-Live’s “Upgrade”. That and “It Don’t Stop” from Then What Happened? are 1 and 2 of my favorites this year.

Oh yeah, and Little Brother’s “Delusional” feat. Oddissee. Oddissee’s got some burners!! That track is crazy…

I think Badu’s “Soldier” rocked and still rocks on. Big up Kareem Riggins.

Looking ahead, there are only two albums I’m really looking forward to this year.

Roc Marcy’s Mossberg Season and Termanology’s Politics As Usual.

Jerrrell Says:

If you didn’t throw up Europass on the top album list, at least show some love to “Motown 25″! Elzhi has one of (if not the) illest verse of the year so far.

9.
Rizoh
Rizoh Says:

I’m loving the new Elzhi. Alas, his album drops on August 12. The list is for albums and songs between 1/1/08 and 7/30/08 as noted above.

I personally thought T.I.’s Song Sucked.

14. askon Says:

Nas’ new album was garbage… it’s about time he shut the f*k up and quit rap… he’s trying way to hard and getting out shined by a lot of up and comer’s when it comes to lyrical ability..

List looks about right though… there hasnt been anything good for a while, i see emc and atmosphere made it up there only few 08 records i actually dont hate…

one of the most on point lists i’ve seen in a while.

good job riz

17. Justa Guy Says:

Yeah. I though the little vic album was great, for a minute. But on the second or third listen I started putting his lyrics together. They’re pretty bad.

He says something along the lines of “You’ll ask if I went through pubterty, as clear as I’m comin through”.

Prepubesent boy jizz. Good job Little V!

I see that you forgot the worst.

No mention of Tech N9ne?????

Wake up people

20. TC Says:

G-Unit’s better than all the albums you listed Riz

21. liuzilla Says:

Might be a stretch- but what about Asher Roth and The Green House Effect Mixtape?

22. heccubus Says:

Nas? Seriously? His albums get worse with each new release, to the point that he hasn’t released anything worthwhile in over a fucking decade. He needs to face the fact that he’s washed up and just retire before he completely ruins his legacy.

23. r Says:

you guys are all dumb and stupid…NAS keeps it real hip hop…you just can’t handle the truth..

24. T,O Says:

Thank God Wale is on the list.. he is up and coming… 100 Miles and Running is his best work IMO.

25. madrinkandmy2step Says:

no mention of Digi-snacks. why ya’ll got no luv for the RzA

26. Darkpoet Says:

Rizoh, man you’re really sleeping on Artofficial - Fists Fights and Foot Races, it’s easily a top 5 album after the first half of the year. An amazing blend of Jazz and Hip Hop.

Two more sleeper albums:

8thW1 - Love, Money and Music
Sun Zoo - Roads on the Earth

8thW1 reminds you of Lupe Fiasco with more control lyrically and less of an absurd, abstract style.

Here’s some Artofficial songs:

27. J to the AAP Says:

No love for ‘We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 3′? Definitely better than a lotta albums so far, including Re-Up’s own. Other than that, on point as usual.

shit! i didn’t realize i did that(i was tired when i wrote it)but the mixtape should still be there.

30. HEART Says:

I gotta agree with ‘J to the AAP’
We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 3 was just insane

31. Joe Says:

You really should listen to Tech N9ne. His new album Killer has some amazing songs, and previous albums have tracks that tear up anything on these lists.

32. dave Says:

you misspelled “upgrayedd”

33. gr3um5 Says:

Nas greatest joint > all emcees

no disrespect to krs, rakim, ..
it’s an other period. period.

34. gr3um5 Says:

cuz Nas greatest hits
have DOPE beats n’ rhymes

some old school but legend emcee no doubt don’t have beat really better than Nas. So
period.

but kanye says Nas is the greatest.
jay-z fucks with Nas… no other !!!! SO ???? i understand

nas career (okay def jam period is weak) but it’s this new era that is weak !!! internet era !!
so Nas career is constance in sell… and street anthits (anthems plus hits)

so come on !

35. CommishCH Says:

Vast Aire and Torae…maybe Pacewon would get my nod. What you think? Cheers.

36. Bobby Says:

Nas’ album was so hot. You guys must be on Wayne’s dick if you didn’t like Nas’ album. He probably has had the best album I have heard in a few years. Only people as good as him are The Game, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Jadakiss. If you say anybody else is as good as him or had a better album, then you don’t know rap music and you are the reason it’s dying. Nas is doing his best to keep it alive and frankly, he is doing a pretty damn good job at it. Tha Carter 3 was the worst album this year. He has no direction when he raps. Not even close to the level of the people I listed above. Wayne only has good hooks. Jay-Z killed Wayne on his own shit. Fuck Wayne. Nas is sick.

37. Bobby Says:

oh yea. I forgot to mention Kanye to he’s grown alot since his last album and his album was hot too

38. gamachan Says:

I was actually surprised to see some ACTUAL good albums here. You have good taste.

39.
Rizoh
Rizoh Says:

^^Thanks.

40. Someone Says:

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby putting The Game in the same sentence with Nas, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Jadakiss while talking about MCing doesn’t help get your point across.

41. Hip Hop Made Me Do It Says:

That We got it for Cheap Vol. 3 was FIRE!!!

42. MO Says:

Mickey Factz Incredible is THE best song you’ve probably never heard this year

43. Rich Law Says:

Rhymefest “Man in the Mirror” is easily the best mixtape ever.

ebonics?

47. Jay-Jitsu Says:

Best mixtape of the year, Kidz In The Hall - Geniuses Need Love Too

Two of the best albums so far and how could you not mention them:
Presto - State of the art album?

Jazz LIberatorz - Clin d’Oeil

For a “non hip hop” album that’s awesome, Zo! & Tigallo love the 80’s

It’s Phonte Tigallo from Little Brother and Zo! doing remake of all these classic 80’s pop songs such as Aha’s take on me and other classics.

48. Ignite Mindz Says:

thanks for the roots and pharoah monch song, already had the j live album. really really really have to disagree with you about the madonna justin timberlake song tho

49. Jay-Jitsu Says:

Also, where’s the mention of 88 Keys mixtape?

50. [B]. ®oane Says:

late as hell but being that it was only for the first 7 months, this list is ON POINT IMO. Great job. Can’t wait for the final list.

buddylee Says:

You guys are idiots!! WHoever was talkin about the line by Nas about Niger and Nigeria makes perfect sense. They are two different countries. He wasn’t talkin about the word Nigger. He was talkin about Niger. Niger is a very poor country. Damn i hate when people talk about shit they have no clue about. Nas is oone of the greatest rappers of all-time and his latest album was hella nice. It was refreshen to hear somethin different than bitches, Cars, and money.

53. brian Says:

how can you say My Life by The Game and Lil Wayne or Top of the World T.I. and Ludacris aren’t on the top charts

54. $D-Money$ Says:

Lil Wayne (weezy) is the s*t, he cn out rap ANYONE! Hes a motha F*kin ca$h money millionaire!

55. jaonyarde32@hotmail.co.uk Says:

NAS’S LYRICAL ABILITY COMPARED TO CANIBUS, ROC MARCY, JOE BUDDEN, ELZHI & ROYCE DA 5′ 9” IS GARBAGE PLUS Y’ALL FORGETING ABOUT AZ’S UNDENYEABLE ALBUM AND ROYCE DA 5′ 9”S BAR EXAM 2
