Thanks to Internet, Universal Lives to See Another Day
We all know that Internet is bad for music, right? Let’s face it, the ever increasing popularity of bootlegging has sent our beloved billion-dollar music industry crumbling on its knees. Hundreds have already lost their jobs and label honchos are now forced to settle for just 1 swimming pool in their backyard, instead of the industry standard 2. That’s what happens when you have a bunch of 15-year old kids in their pajamas downloading busloads of free music with lemonade-coated fingers.
Turns out that some hack is relentlessly trying to convince us that Internet has done some good for once. Hear this: Universal actually gained 5% in revenues due to digital and mobile downloads!
In his interview with the Financial Times, Jean-Bernard Lévy, CEO of Vivendi and owner of the world’s largest label Universal Music Group, claimed that his label seen revenues increased by 5 percent on a constant currency basis in the first half of the 2008.
