The 2008 Rap Critics Poll – Winners

After months of planning, we’re finally ready to unveil the 2008 Rap Critics Poll winners. For the uninitiated, every year I ask hip-hop bloggers, journalists, critics, etc, to send me their respective Best of Hip-Hop lists, which we then tally up (using a 1-10 point system) to determine the year’s best hip-hop music. Now in its 3rd year, the Rappity Rap list received a unique birthday gift — its very own website! My boy Ivan had the awesome responsibility of counting and re-counting all the ballots, while the homey Zilla, who’s been killing the web design game for a minute, was kind enough to build the site during the holiday break.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the 2008 Rap Critics Poll:

These are useful lists but the mixtape category seems a bit skewed towards “rapper” mixtapes. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only true DJ mix I saw on there was Premier’s “Time 4 Change.” Jaycee made some pretty dope mixes this year, but I didn’t see his name anywhere on the list. I’m not trying to take anything away from the mixes on the list, but it seems there should still be a place for true dj mixes.

I’m looking at the album list but i don’t see #9…

Nice setup though

Great job! A couple suggestions/quibbles:

- Formatting on site looks a little off??

- Put affiliations (and links to their sites) next to the names on the individual ballots?

Nice work, but you know you’re gonna get even more ballots next year this way! Nice, clean layout.

Bacemonk, ‘rapper’ mixtapes are indeed the majority but Primo’s wasn’t the only DJ mix by far; Santogold – Top Ranking: A Diplo Dub
DJ D-Nice – The Wackness
DJ Z-Trip – Party for Change

Those are also DJ mixes and then there’s lots of grey area stuff like tapes where DJ’s and producers present remixes or mashups centering on certain artists like Viva La Hova or Common – S.T.O.R.Y.

Guys, thanks for the suggestions. We’re definitely going to do a better job this year.

E.Tiggidy: #9 is a tie. Look again, fam.

6. ian Says:

Maybe the mixtape category should be renamed ‘Mixtapes & Street Albums’?
