Internet rumor is that this is in preparation for the documentary he and Casey Affleck are working on, and that Phoenix is playing a “character” in order to highlight how the public responds to the meteoric fall of a popular actor. Sort of a post-modern, kind-of-Andy Kaufman “not telling a joke and that’s the joke” kind of thing.

He could just be crazy though.

The Andy Kaufman influence is unmistakable. I heard Ben Affleck is filming all this for the documentary. Part of me wants to see him drop a rap album though. For the sheer hilarity.

Damn, Letterman is good. Credit to Phoenix though for not taking the easy out and going on Leno, who’d probably just let him walk all over the show. Letterman kept up and gave as good as he got. You could see Phoenix breaking character a bit and laughing at some of the jabs. Way entertaining.
