“Lightworks (Produced by J. Dilla)”
No, it wasn’t, unless it was done before Dilla’s passing. “Produced” does not mean “has a beat by,” believe it or not. Watch producers work – non hip hop or other wise – and see what a producer does.
While hiphop has brought a lot of credit to producers that most people wouldn’t give otherwise, to assume that all they do is make beats is so shitty, it kills me.
I know YOU didn’t list the track as such, Riz, I’m just saying. It’s a pet peeve.

Rizoh Says:
Nah, I feel you on that. It boggles my mind whenever I see “Produced by Dilla” on a song when all the artist did was rap over a Dilla beat.

^ true story.
on a sidenote, MF Doom stans are right up there with Canibus and Joe Budden stans as the most annoying in the game.

that happens a lot. load of press releases say “produced by J Dilla” when it should say “i rapped over this instrumental i just downloaded”

khal Says:
PS – what IS the deal with lightworks? i ask because its been said that DOOM and Dilla were working on shit from time to time for some project. Now, on DONUTS, we had 2 cuts that ended up on Fishscale… could it be that Lightworks really WAS intended for DOOM?

J to the AAP Says:
Somehow ‘producer’ has become synonimous with ‘beatmaker’ in HipHop, which is a bit skewed indeed. It’s not impossible Dilla actually worked on those tracks beyond the beat though.
@Khal: I think so, it’s probably leftover from the Sniperlite sessions: http://www.stonesthrow.com/store/12-inch/dilla-ghost-doom/sniperlite

Hey khal, I was wondering the same thing about Lightworks. Maybe you should toss this question to the twitter crowd. There’s gotta be a dilla stan out there with all the goods.

you guys do realize that doom worked with dilla before dilla’s passing. They could’ve made these songs and decided to scrap em but then once dilla dies doom brings out the old tracks he did with dilla (even though they may suck) just to capitalize of dilla’s passing . its sad really. Its just like madlib he’s lost more instrumentals in his blunt shelter than he has actually put out. so think about it fellas.

everyone that’s bitchin bout how you can’t produce from the grave is retarded. if you really listen to hip hop, you might be familiar with… J Dilla? and that lightworks is a beat he made way back in 06 for DONUTS. that beat is classic. anyway ill back dilla on PRODUCING that but MCs really need to stop reusing dilla beats. dilla beats will always be dilla tracks no matter who rhymes over em. i mean they’re better than doom beats but people rhymin over these beats it sounds like a damn remix and sounds like dilla didnt intend for it. doom fuck your solo albums go back to makin full albums with real PRODUCERS like madlib jakeone dangermouse whoever. yall need to listen to real hip hop too. everyone heres too into the “image” of underground hip hop. i know you listen to lil wayne and 50 in your car. Underground hip hop is the only type of true hip hop music.

i think people that hate doom are stupid and i also think people that worship him are stupid. his musics not worth admiring, his mask is kinda dope and thats probably why you think hes dope, and everyone that hates doom hates him cuz he doesnt show up for shows, and i think thats whack but really…. who the fuck cares. skip this album and cop tha carter III… i heard hes been compared to jimi hendrix and as someone who knows at least a little about music i can see the similarities between wayne and hendrix. PURE GENIUS.
what a fuckin joke. got nothing against mainstream just against shitty “music” and a million stupid mutherfuckers that are willin to throw down 10 bucks to cop it.
oh and one deep, you know whats up. how id love to dig thru some of madlibs hidden collection.

AVATAR ZERO Says:
Well to everyone complaining about them putting “produced by J.Dilla” on lightworks… who the hell is supposed to get the credit for the beat if not the person that made it. Dead or alive your credit is due at all times.
|

smallpro Says:
woooow some of you are actually retarded; in hip-hop ‘produced’ can mean they just did the beat or it can me they worked on the song together, but…its 2009, that shit’s not gonna change; fuck they gonna put, ‘beat made by’ rather than ‘produced’?
|

BadKarma Says:
all good points.. but as an artist who uses dilla beats on the regular.. and puts (Produced by J-Dilla).. its the most obvious way to shout out a producer you respect and admire..
not because im trynna get brownie points off his name like i did a song with him.. because a beat is just as important as vocals and people should know who to give credit for the other half of my song.. lol.. and mf doom is the fucking shit.. complex grimey barz.. much respect
