Oh puhleeese.

Too bad people are too stupid to THINK and realize that this comic isn’t even about Obama, since you know, he didn’t write the bill.

2. Koop Says:

Agreed.

3. CathrynMarie Says:

Actually, after reading the Posts reply to Rev Al, I’ll have to agree with the above comments. I guess it was a natural reaction to assume the worst when others felt it was mocking Obama. But clearly, as the @dronkmunk says, it’s not about Obama and they were mocking the current events, and not Obama…….

“The New York Post Compares Obama to Crazy Chimp”

Can you reach any harder? You must be running low on hits to make a title like that.

But then again the majority of your viewers only come here thru “The Focus” on RealTalkNY

5. NYHC81 Says:

Obama is apart of the Executive Branch. They sign bills, they don’t write them. Nice try.

6. MimesisBTG Says:

Even if this was not intended to be a shot at Obama, the people at the Post are not stupid, and they must have known how this picture would be interpreted (i.e., our first black president is a chimp who should be shot).

At best, I think that it is in bad taste.

7. esbee Says:

Its all about context and perception and personally if I were a cartoonist I would NOT put this out given the current climate and turn of events since Nov. 20

I know it can be taken either way and I can see how as far as being objective about it is concerned.

8. John M Says:

Regardless of how strained the racist connection is made, I’m more offended at how piss-poor a political cartoon it is. In attempting subtlety, the cartoonist instead made it pointless and contrived.

9. Mahogany01 Says:

That was definitely in bad taste!

10. Mr.IHateRappers Says:

this is the very reason i never buy the Post(that shit is pure toilet paper).

Yeah, I agree it was in bad taste. A rabbit with gigantic ears would’ve been more appropriate.

Hey Mikey,
You might want to take a lesson from NYHC81 on how to reject an argument without sounding like your lips are tightly clenched on someone else’s dick.

14. Say Says:

Rizoh, how would a rabbit with gigantic ears have been more appropriate? A rabbit with gigantic ears did not get shot and killed by cops the other day in Stamford, CT, only 45 minutes outside of NYC. That’s where the chimp comes from.

As far as comparing Obama to the chimp, several have already stated it, but Obama doesn’t write the bills. So this obviously is not in reference to him.

Speaking of lips being tightly clenched to someone’s dick. Ever since Obama announced his run for the presidency, your lips have been tighlty clenched around his dick.

Anyway, the NYP is garbage. Nothing more than a tabloid.

“As far as comparing Obama to the chimp, several have already stated it, but Obama doesn’t write the bills. So this obviously is not in reference to him.”

First, this is a really bad argument. The White House (and by extension Obama) did write the bill, and then sent it to congress to rework. The Republicans have been complaining about this for the past couple of weeks now, saying that the White House had already written the bill by the time Obama decided to ask for their input.

Second, the chimp reference has to be put into its historical contexts. In the late nineteenth century, after the end of the Civil War and the failure of Reconstruction, whites made arguments about blacks being genetically inferior to whites. Visually, blacks were often portrayed as monkeys, because monkeys represented a lower form of evolutionary development. It seems to me that the Post was playing off this heinous and insulting stereotype.

^^MimesisBTG speaks the truth.

18. NYHC81 Says:

@ MimesisBTG

two things.

1. Obama (who you think is a shot to death monkey, obviously..) did not write the bill. He has never nor will he ever write a bill. He’s the President, he has a cabinet that consists of over 20 appointed positions (heads) and consultants who suggest ideas. Congress adds the numbers, to simply say they “rework” the bill is like saying Dr. Dre “rework”s beats because he uses someone else’s upploaded piano samples.

2. The Post has certain racist elements because that’s what people (morons) like to read here in NYC. However their historical racism dates back to the mid 90’s, the 1990’s, not the 1890’s. Most of these guys don’t know the Reconstruction from let’s say therapup.uproxx.com (-input smart comment here-).

So in summary no one had Civil War stereotypes when they created that cartoon. But one guy who read it probably said something to the editor and they were like “fuck it, leave it in”.

No sense of journalistic responsibility, not racism.

19. NYHC81 Says:

EDIT: So in summary no one had Civil War stereotypes **in mind** when they created that cartoon..

20. DAnO Says:

“sounding like your lips are tightly clenched on someone else’s dick.” Haha “tightly clenched” that’s funny.

21. DAnO Says:

Sites like HuffPost and Drudge were all over this. But I don’t think anyone paid it any attention. People are too scared to be racist these days, they want to see if Obama can turn things around, so all the rest is just noise.

22. Anonymous Says:

@NYHC81

I disagree.

1. I understand how the system works. However, Obama has been on the road selling this bill for weeks now. I would argue that in the mind of the public, Obama is the author of the bill whether or not he actually sat down and wrote it himself. In fact, on many news broadcasts I have heard reports refer to it as “Obama’s stimulus package.”

2. In order to be a journalist, you have to have taken some history courses. While forms of racism have certainly changed over time, the idea that blacks are somehow naturally inferior to whites is an idea that you could still find in white supremacy literature today. In particular, images of blacks as monkeys have been prominent well into the twentieth century. Thus, while these ideas have their roots in the late nineteenth century, over time they have become and remain a primary element of racist thinking in America.

I think that the reason why so many people associate this image with Obama is not just because of the reference to the stimulus bill but also because it is a chimp being shot. Most people with any familiarly with African American history would recognize the powerful symbolism of this image.

23. Anonymous Says:

Check out this photograph published in The Time-Life Book Early Man in 1970. It is one example of how this association of blacks with monkeys has endured over the years.

24. NYHC81 Says:

‘on many news broadcasts I have heard reports refer to it as “Obama’s stimulus package.” ‘

So that makes it true because that’s what the news says. I get it now. Thanks for explaining it.

25. hoodah Says:

why is racism lately the topic of choice on the news stations… guess the economy is not as important, other than that lady that keeps getting a paycheck talking about little caylee (rip)

26. hoodah Says:

Damn, just thinking the 4th branch of the govt is in full effect!
