How to Alienate Your Female Fan Base in 10 Days or Less

drake-bieh

So, Drake has had every girl in the world thinking that they were the definition of the “Best I’ve Ever Had” ever since his mixtape dropped. At first, it appeared that the light skinned boy wonder from Toronto could do no wrong in the eyes of the female demographic he was (successfully) targeting. And who could blame us for loving it? When was the last time a hip-hop song came out that was specifically for us carriers of estrogen that didn’t include the words “hoe,” “bitch,” “slut” or any variation of “I just wanna fuck you tonight”?

Women loved Drake, guys loved him for creating that song (and thus giving them a new line to use to “impress” any and every chick) and it seemed as if Drake could do no wrong.

That was until the “Best I Ever Had” video dropped.

Somehow, Drake and Kanye (the video’s director) managed to turn a cute love ode into a boob-filled, soft porn mini-movie. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against boobs, seeing as I have a nice set my damn self. But the entire video took away from the song’s intended meaning. Instead of making women feel special and loved, which is why 99.9% of us loved the song in the first place, it made us feel objectified. And how could it not?

team-drake
It was 5 minutes chock full of pretty models bouncing around bra-less and gratuitous scenes of chicks stretching. The scene where he told every girl on the team that they were ALL “the best” took away any special conotation there was to “the best.” However, my personal favorite was when he told the girls to “Take that D! Take that D like the champions that they are!”

*blank stare*

Really?! That didn’t even SOUND right coming out of the graduate of Degrassi High’s mouth, nor was it necessary. The video was a disaster from the moment it started and the backlash against him and it was immediate.

Drake lost a chunk of his fan base the day that video was premiered. Maybe one day, he’ll get them back. I hope so, because if he hadn’t figured it out by now, I’ll be happy to tell him that females are probably the only demographic still buying CDs at this time. To piss us off is not the best thing to do, not even from a business standpoint. Bottom line: That idea was definitely not “the best he ever had”. Then again, neither was getting Kanye to direct his video. *shrugs*

Best line in the piece: “Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against boobs, seeing as I have a nice set my damn self…” Classic.

Oh yeah, poignant article too.

3. moneda Says:

When I asked a woman last Saturday what she thought of Drake and the only thing she could think to say was “overrated” I felt justified in having completely ignored him and his supposedly rising star.

4. Niecey Says:

I agree totally….thing is it doesn’t take much to win ladies back……..sad but true

5. M. Says:

I completely agree… but I know all those ladies (who dislike the video) will forget about it and BUY the album when it comes out… which is why this will continue to happen

6. The Blog Bully Says:

“Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against boobs, seeing as I have a nice set my damn self…”

^Twitpic or GTFO.

but yeah I agree with this except his fanbase isn’t significantly shrunken yet.

No one puts Black Barbie in a corner. No one.

8. Black Barbie Says:

Thank you Rizoh for coming to my defense, but I know the Blog Bully (ddotomen) personally and he was just joking, I promise.

However, its nice to see my fam will take up for me! :)

10. um Says:

i agree that this video is going to alienate female fans, but doesn’t he say “other hoes ain’t never on it” during the chorus? doesn’t he say, “she makes me beg for it, ’til she gives it up and I say the same thing every single time.”

that’s not love. he’s blatantly telling you that he wants to fuck and is willing to say what it takes to make you fuck. any woman offended by the excessive imagery of this has a right to be pissed. but “Best I Ever Had” is blatantly an “I just want to fuck you” song. If you didn’t realize that, you weren’t paying attention.

11. Word Says:

Pretty much. That’s if the majority of his fans isn’t lighter women with jiggly juggles of course.

Oh and ROTFL @ the Dirty Dancing quote.

12. esbee Says:

Doesn’t black barbie deserve an official welcome?

jussayin’

btw: welcome black barbie, my name is esbee and I sorta emcee on the side. ;-)

13. The Disgruntled Baller Says:

OMG…

Are you hoes serious?

Please… It is a video. Please get off of your soapbox, and join us here in reality.

In my short time here on this earth, there are few things that I can articulate with 100% confidence. One of those things I can speak accurately on is this;

No matter what, someone will complain. No matter what it is, who does it, how it was done, when it was done, etc. Someone will find a problem with it. Seriously, get over yourselves.

14. Black Barbie Says:

@ The Disgruntled Baller,

I have my opinion, as you have yours. However, calling me a “ho” is unnecessary just because my opinion differs from yours. You say that “no matter what, someone will complain…get over yourselves”. Ironic, when you’re complaining about MY blog post. I give you the same response, homie. Get over yourself.

Have a nice day,
The only chick of TRU

15. Black Barbie Says:

Ps. thanks to all who commented, whether you agreed with my post or not. I appreciate the convo about how I felt about the video, and whether you agreed or disagreed with my opinion.

and to Esbee, what up!

16. KThundo Says:

i doubt he lost any female fans because of the video

if anything, he’s lost fans because niggas discovered he played a cripple with a fucked up hair cut on Degrassi

17. Christa Says:

i totally agree w/ this post…its a shame

18. yankee.Fitted Says:

I too think it’s a shame. It’s a damn shame none of those tittys popped out during the whole video.

19. lem Says:

Ladies settle down. Drake is a great artist, f the haters, but seriously chill ladies. Its a video directed by Mr. West. They obviously felt like it was a funny approach to the video why cant ya. Appreciate Drake for his talent cause the dude is the truth (very versatile). He isnt my fav rapper but real recognize real.

21. ayeroxor Says:

Wow. Shitty overcomplicated computer percussion, shouting nonsense “oh!… oh!…” in the background, and to top it off, fucking annoying auto-tune.

Not only is he clearly a colossal dick, but he’s completely untalented and unoriginal.

I’m sure all of the above play into the fact that nobody wants his shit: It’s just like all the other shit out there.

22. dakos Says:

To every comment on here that says girls should just “chill”, you need to stfu.

There is a way to be provocative and sensual without being so corny and unoriginal. Can you tell me if there is anything in that video that we havent seen before in terms of originiality? No, not .1% of it was something that actually took some creative effort.

We should reward those that choose to fill our media up with lazy, underproduced and overhyped nonsense.

Universal wanted his shit; and their marketing department will make sure young women continually want it… at least until the next Bow Wow/Drake/Chris Brown emerges.

25. gvn11 Says:

I don’t listen to hip hop, so I didn’t know who Drake was before this. Now I do. Not sure if it was intentional, but controversy creates awareness.

Wow, the chick who wrote this article is not very bright. Umm…he raps, all rappers are misogynists. Remember when everyones squeaky clean hero Mr. Brown beat his woman? But like most girls you want to believe what you want to believe until you are forced to face the truth

29. Bobby Says:

I mean sure he lost the females but I am guessing he picked up quite a few male fans in their place :P

30. Norman Says:

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING. How the hell is this a cute love song? “Get it from the back and make ya fucking bra strap pop, All up in ya slot till a nigga hit the jackpot”
Yeah those lines are incredibly romatic… LOL!!! If I used that on my gf she’d kick me in the balls to show me how romantic she finds it. You sound more like a dude posing as a woman. Sorry but you are crazy if you find this song touching, romantic, and not objectifying women.

31. sdjtd Says:

Yeah, how is this in any way shape or form misleading? The song is the way the song is, and the video is hardly wrong.

Yeah, I am a male, but you seriously are misinterpreting the video in such a poor way. First off, there are hardly boob shots, at all. The fact they hired bid breast women and mad maybe 1, 2 boob ‘flashes’ doesnt imply the video was made with the intention of showing off breasts.

Secondly, he says ‘you are the best’ and apparently the author wanted it mean ME and noone else. Well in the video, he was a hard* working coach that worked solely working for a team. He didn’t go around dry humping them.

In the end, it could have ended with a amatuer message of them winning. Winning with minimal effort, shallow intentions, and ‘you da best’ solving the world. Maybe that works better for both females and males that want to ’simplify and brain wash’ themselve into an illusion of love.

But he even self-criticizes the 2, 3 shots where girls were stretching too much. He laments as he sees he needs to put more effort into the future.

Saying YOU are the best isnt the answer. Its just the beggining. Thats what I got from the video.

what in the sam hell? Bitches haven’t seen titties and ass in a video before? LOL We are in 2009, right? I think the chicks who dislike him now are chicks who just LOOKED and him and never LISTENED to him….The man has been put on pedestal and chicks just didn’t want to look at him as a RAPPER lol…The take that D was OBVIOUSLY a joke, I miss why one would take offense to it…AGAIN, people thinking Drake is nothing more than a horny toad, man of a rapper, didn’t want to see this..well, hopefully now those same chicks will go back and listen to his LYRICS….

Clearly, I wasn’t offended, I laughed the majority of the video and thought nothing of it..do you want to know why? BECAUSE ITS A GOD DAMN VIDEO! lol Why would I let a video change how I feel about an artist – his lyrical content > the T & A in a video…Bitches are dumb for thinking “Best I Ever Had” was a chick anthem anyway….

*and scene*……(off to gawk & my amazing breasts in the mirror)

CathrynMarie
CathrynMarie Says:

The irony of this post is that its on a site where the owner posts half naked chicks weekly for the link exchange section….LOL So chicks pick and choose when its acceptable for a man to showcase (degrade) a half naked woman? I don’t see the female fans in comments holding a protest about the pics LOL….

35.
CathrynMarie
CathrynMarie Says:

Rizoh hit me “I can tell you didn’t read the entire article. She specifically said that she didn’t mind the titties at all.”….

I did read the whole article…..the reference of breasts was presented more than once, not to mention my MAIN point of my comment is that the actual song is NOT a theme song for women…READ THE LYRICS! …and just because this young lady has no problem w/ breasts, there is no denying the fact that most of the chicks complaining about the video is that the chicks are running around half naked w/ boobs flying every where; my comment was directed to women in general, not just the writer of the post…

36. Andrew Says:

Shut up and make me a sandwich.

37. Nahshon Says:

New Hip-Hop rule: Say nothing that could be perceived as negative about Drake in any way. Hipster Hopster’s must put the great Drakes picture up in their living rooms. Dude runs the game like Stalin.

Watch this video, and you’ll know that Drakes true female fan base doesn’t care about the Best I Ever Had video (they don’t see him as some pop singer, he’s a rapper after all).

Iron my shirt!

41. gvn11 Says:

After listening to that song, you have to be pretty dumb not to know what it’s about. It’s about him telling every girl she’s the best. Wasn’t hard to figure out from the lyrics.

42. khal Says:

how did i miss this drop? very well written, and an interesting viewpoint that i doubt drake or kanye saw when making this vid. very poor choice IMO.

43. ATI Says:

42 comments? Drake won.

44. John Says:

So you actually thought Drake was singing specifically to you? I’m sorry but Drake is no Michael Jackson. Only MJ can pull off some shit like that. LMAO @ females.

45. moneda Says:

“Why would I let a video change how I feel about an artist…”

This is why we can’t have nice things.

46. IB Says:

Hahaha @ females getting pissed off at the video when the song DOES have the words bitch and ho, and also has romantic lines like “I can make yo pussy whistle”. Ya’ll gotta clean your ears out next time.

47. Jameelah Says:

i actually thought it was a message to women in that video/ Tits and ass are not everything and to wake the hell up. Stop being shallow and stupid. and stop letting a man tell you that your his best when hes telling 50 other women the same thing. simple clear message WAKE UP WOMEN

50. J to the AAP Says:

Wow, haven’t seen the comments run wild like this since Rizoh crowned Wayne emperor of the universe. Nice one C.

I don’t think this is ever gonna turn to feminist forum (Cuban Linx anyone?) but does that mean an issue like this can’t be adressed? It’s definitely a newsworthy story in the game right now regardless of your viewpoint.

By the way, starting your comment with a ‘hoe please’ or anything similair immediately disqualifies your participation in any healthy discussion and might even disprove your own point. Blanket statements like ‘all rappers are misogynists’ don’t help either.

I know the internet gives people a degree of anonymity to the point where they think they can think they can just blurt out any brain fart but you’ll really make a stronger point if you keep it civil.

51. Muse Says:

Everyone just calm down!

Drake did not lose his fan base because of the video. The women who liked this song are women who just like songs for the beat and hook anyway. They’ll be back on the next single. If you listened to the “game” he was spittin’ throughout the song you would know that he’s just trying to hit. These women wouldn’t know love if it smacked them in the face. Then again, some women think gettig hit is love too. Hmmm…

52. 100% Says:

J to the AAP you lame ass nigga thats just a bitch way of saying you agree with everyone whose saying whoever wrote this article is a dumb shit.
