Asher “Asleep In The Bread Aisle” Roth – “D.O.A.” (Remix)

Asher Roth Rothin' It.

Everyone’s second favorite college dropout’s camp released this tasty “D.O.A.” remix yesterday. Roth does what he does best, goofy off-kilter references that make you chuckle. My only question is why does this kid continue to rap better on singles he releases than on the album he put out?

Graduation: Freshmen Class Awards

xxl-coverLast night, I realized that there is really nothing new about these guys anymore. When you consider mixtapes, touring before you have a single, and (yes, Freeway) the blogosphere, your average rapper who is getting any kind of play can stop using the term freshmen after just a few months. But since the summer is here, that means that the school year is officially over, and when we come back in the fall, you’re in class with the big boys. So go ahead and drop your album on the same day as Hov and 50; you’re not a freshmen anymore.

That being said, let’s not start making our way for the new class just yet, because there is just a little more hazing to do. Let’s give out the year-end awards for the first-year (or so) standouts who actually passed a test or two this year, then maybe we can stop calling these people freshmen.

Who Sang It Better: Estelle or Keri Hilson?

estelle-vs-keri

Get Asher Roth on the phone, we need to talk about Track 6 on Asleep in the Bread Aisle. Estelle was on the original version of the song, but was quietly cut and replaced by Keri Hilson at the last minute. What’s wrong, Asher? Did Keri put a spell on you? Was Estelle’s hair too nappy for you?

Seriously, this is nothing new. It’s commonplace in the industry to switch artists for business reasons, which they often masquerade as creative reasons. Keri is poppin’ right now. People have already forgotten about Estelle’s album. You may recall that Snoop swapped Akon for Nate Dogg on “Boss’ Life”; Kanye replaced John Legend’s beautifully-sung version of “Coming Home” with Chris Martin’s “Homecoming”; and The Roots dumped Jill Scott in favor of Erykah Badu on “You Got Me,” even though Scott penned the chorus. So, yeah, it happens.

Proceed for your double treat of “She Don’t Want a Man” and tell us who sang it better.

Rick Rawse Rains on Asher Roth’s Parade

Despite all the publicity Asher Roth enjoyed from his apparent obsession with nappy-headed hoes, his debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle only managed a moderate 65,000 copies in its first week. That was good enough to land A-Roth at No.5, behind Depeche Mode, Rascal Flatts, and the Miley Cyrus sountrack. The Bawse, on the other hand, easily cruised to numero uno with 158,000 units. OMG! Asher Roth Totally Just Hates Black People

[Above: Asher Roth attends a Whites Only beach party]

Asher Roth, a rapper whiter than sour cream, had the Internetz going nuts over some dumb racist joke a few days ago. Apparently A-Roth was at Rutgers University to bless the college kids with his awesome presence. There can only be one logical excuse for what happened next.

Asher Roth – “Y.O.U.” (Feat. Slick Rick)

Asher Roth – “You” (Feat. Slick Rick)

Oh hey, behold the bonus track from that “I Love College” guy. I gather that his debut album, Asleep in the Bed Aisle, is selling like hot cakes right now. In fact, if you don’t hurry to Best Buy, you’ll miss this wagon. And that’s not cool.

In case you’re wondering, Roth reserved this special treat for his U.K. fans to send a powerful message to his stateside fans: “See what happens when you keep stupidly comparing me to that white guy from Detroit?”

Don’t Buy ‘Asleep In the Bread Aisle’

Everyone’s doing sarcasm now that Rizoh has made it cool? You’re welcome, Asher. Hey, maybe you should also thank these guys. Just all around FAIL.
