Age Ain’t Nuthin’ But A Number

55292554

With the release of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, the internet and the streets have been asking the same question over and over again – is Jay-Z too old to be rapping? This isn’t a new question at all in hip-hop. Whenever someone that’s deemed to be old school (LL Cool J, any of the WuTang Clan members, Rakim, etc.) releases a new project, the hip-hop community always tends to pit them against new, younger rappers. While determining whether or not an older rapper is still relevant and still has their chops is still a valid question to debate, I wonder why our community isn’t looking more at the rapper’s skills and chooses instead to look at their age. Let’s debate, shall we? Read the rest of this entry »

Full Transcript of President Obama’s Education Speech

In the rare event that you happen to know someone who’s been throwing a tantrum over el Presidente’s decision to talk to kids about the importance of education, please print out a copy of the following transcript and send it to them.

Let’s call this bullsh*t for what it is. The hoopla over Obama’s speech has absolutely nothing to do with politics. The reality is that there are still somein this country who simply don’t want their kids to look up to Obama. Period. I don’t remember anyone screaming “communism” when Reagan did the same thing. Hell, Dubya was reading to his fellow 8th graders when the towers fell.

K’naan and J Period – The Messengers (Episode 1: Fela Kuti)

knaan-and-j-period-the-messengers-11

The Messengers (Episode 1: Fela Kuti) is the first of three EPs by K’naan and J Period designed to pay homage to three cultural icons: Fela Kuti, Bob Dylan, and Bob Marley.

Many of the songs here are blends of K’naan’s Troubadour and assorted Fela instrumentals. K’naan’s first verse on “Got My Dream,” for instance, was extracted from “America.”

If you’re like me and are already acquainted with nearly every recording in Fela’s discography, you may not fully appreciate K’naan’s effort here. To newly converted disciples, however, The Messengers Episode 1 should serve as a competent primer on Fela’s unique Afrobeat sound. Extra cool points for the autobiographical interludes.

The Most Offensive Ad in History

jackos-nose

There’s a formula for instant success in the age of New Media: mesh tragic historic events or figures with some offensive humor, toss it out on the web, sit back and watch it hit the runway. A Belgian humor magazine has done just that. What follows is a series of ads that will have Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck bent out of shape when these pictures finally reach mainstream news circuit. The last one is inexcusable.
