Rakim Hasn’t Lost a Step [Video]

Here’s the GOAT Rakim giving the Ruby Skye crowd a whirlwind tour of his enviable catalog. Ra performed gems like “Paid In Full” and “I Know You Got Soul” as if it was ‘88 all over again.

If you’re in the Houston area, you can catch Rakim, Rhymefest, and Three 6 Mafia at the House of Blues on November 3rd. If you’re in other parts of the States, proceed to see the remaining tour dates.

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys Perform “Empire State of Mind” at World Series [Video]

No tickets to the World Series? No problem. Here’s the much ballyhooed “Empire State of Mind” performance. I’d be surprised if there are any more Yankee hats left in NYC.

P.O.S. – Never Better [Video]

P.O.S. has unveiled a music video for “Never Better,” the title track from his latest album. Unfortunately, Never Better is easily a candidate for Sleeper of the Year. The P.O.S. sound is akin to aural wallpaper. Despite the rich, intricate pattern of his wallpaper, it can’t quite compete with the other brands hanging up on everyone’s wall. I strongly recommend this aural wallpaper.

The Only Reason to Watch BET Hip-Hop Awards

eminem_black thought

If you guessed that last night’s BET Hip-Hop Awards was business as usual, you deserve a bag of Cheetos and an autographed copy of the Internet for being right on the money. The same names won the same categories. Most of the performers could have easily been replaced with dry ice. The only bright moment, aside from Ice Cube’s “I Am Hip-Hop” award, was seeing Kid ‘N Play sneak in and steal some dance steps. Despite the show’s pitfalls, there’s a segment that continues to stand out every year – the Cypher. The setting is perfect and they always seem to pick the right combination of MCs. Forget an MTV Top 10, Eminem is seriously making a case for all-time Top 10.

Peep high quality clips of the cypher bits below:

Chace Infinite – Personal Religion [Video]

You’ve never heard of Chace Inifinite? *Sigh* Kids these days. Even my grandmother has heard of Chace. In a nutshell, Chace is the emceeing half of Self Scientific. The other half? Producer extraordinaire DJ Khalil. I’m sure you’ve heard of him. “Personal Religion” is taken from Chace Infinite’s I Would’ve Killed This mixtape, which finds him rapping over beats Khalil made for other artists. It’s a great concept and this is one of the best I’ve heard from him lately.

Spike Jonze Explains Why Kanye Pulled ‘Fairytale’ Video

kanye spike jonze short

The Internet was treated to a Kanye’s We Were Once A Fairytale video, which was directed by Spike Jonze. And then, almost as quickly as it appeared, the video vanished from Kanye’s blog. YouTube videos were replaced by that unsightly “video has been removed by user” message. No explanation was offered.

In an interview with The New York Times, Spike Jonze said that the clip you were drooling over was actually an unfinished version that leaked from the post-production facility of a friend. Basically, Ye had no idea.

“I think he was like, ‘Oh, it’s out. I’ll link to it’,” says Jonze.

Well, Spike wasn’t too happy about it. “This is the first time it’s happened to me and it is a weird feeling, like, ‘Wait a second – I wasn’t ready to put that out!’” he added. “‘That’s mine!’ Uh, no. I guess it’s not mine anymore.”

We Were Once A Fairytale will get its official release on iTunes next Tuesday, October 27.
