Remembering DJ Screw

up-dj_screw_1_lg

Without DJ Screw there would be no Houston hip-hop. Period. Houston’s unofficial nickname is Screwston for a good reason. It all started with Robert Earl Davis Jr. and his desire to slow the world down. He propelled a simple art form to unfathomable heights. Screw left us 9 years ago today, but not without leaving an indelible mark on the game. Peep a sample of Screw’s game-changing sound below. Lean is optional.

The hype over Mixtape Messiah 7 is bananas. Someone actually bid as much as $8,500 on a copy!

Chamillionaire – Show Me The Money

King Koopa is back on his grind. “Show Me The Money” came out of nowhere but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up on Cham’s new album.

Twitpic of the Day: The Braidless One

slim-thugga-is-now-thugg-boss

No, that’s not a taller Flo Rida. That’s Houston’s own Slim Thug. Thug clipped his braids and posted this pic on Twitter yesterday with the following press statement:

“The end of slim thugga muthafucka the beginning of thugboss biiittcchh!!!”

What’s with everyone chopping off their hair these days? Busta, Melo, Solange, Chamillionaire, and now Slim Thug. How are you going to make hits now without your braids? F-ck you, Slim! I’m not your fan anymore!!

Rapper Shoots Music Video with iPhone. Wait, What?

Either the economic downturn has really started to take a toll on rappers or Paul Wall needed a new angle to plug his album (I’m leaning towards the latter). Whatever the case, our good friend Isiah Carey of Fox 26 has put together a nifty story on how Paul Wall shot his latest video on an iPhone. Yes, it’s a full-fledged music video.

Rukus – “Life of A Star” Freestyle

Rukus – “Life of A Star” [Produced by: J Slikk]

Ruk went in on this one. It’s either the AC or this dusky joint really gave me goose bumps the first time I heard it.

Says Rukus: “With all the blending of the hip hop genre with r&b I wanted to work on a project that’s more gritty and gets back to just rhyming. What better than to rap over J Slikk’s dusty beats. This is the first in a series.”
