Oh Great! Another Madlib Clone

I always receive a pissload of emails from wannabe rapper types who swear that their music is so ill AIDS is scared to catch it (word to Bis). 99% of the music is terribly drenched in mediocrity, of course. This is one of those 1% when I’ve received something worthwhile. The Admiral’s Deeper Than You Think is a beat tape supposedly inspired by the two wonderlords of hip-hop purists — Madlib and J Dilla.

Says The Admiral: “The whole project was inspired by Madlib’s Shades of Blue, I bought it on vinyl a few months ago and listened to “Montara” on it and it sparked the light. J Dilla’s production also provided inspiration for the project.”

I don’t know if it’s the brilliant skits or the lightweight soul sludge, but I stayed up till 3 am listening to this over and over for some weird reason. It’s definitely chill music, so don’t come in here with your dancing shoes on.

Freebie Friday: ‘Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas’

If I only get one post each year to plug a mixtape that nobody else probably gives two shits about, it has to be Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas. Nothing but trunk-rattling beats and catchy hooks on this hurr mixtape. I’ve been bumping this bad boy for 2 weeks straight and it’s still as refreshing as ever. A couple of songs are skippable, but the production is damn near flawless. Diplo, who scored an Album of the Year Grammy nod for his work on M.I.A.’s album, is on top of his game here. At a pay what you want price, Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas makes for a great stocking stuffer.

Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas Tracklist:

‘Sonic the Hamilton’ Proof of Hipster Rap’s Suckiness?

I’ve been avoiding Charles Hamilton’s Sonic the Hamilton mixtape like a leper, and after reading Xplosive’s scathing synopsis of the mixtape I’m still not interested in it.

Peep game:

The conclusion I’ve drawn after listening to Sonic the Hamilton is that the hipster rap movement is nothing more than recycling of what we called backpack rap until about a month ago. The same people have traded in their backpacks and Ecko hoodies for Louis Vuitton man-purses and designer brand flannel.

Ouch! Catch more of Xplosive’s well articulated rant at Xplosive World.
