David LaChapelle, who’s shot everyone from Jay-Z to Britney Spears, is one of the illest music photographers of our generation. Part of LaChapelle’s artistic charm is that he has a way of making his subjects look like otherworldly creatures. In the examples below: Lil Kim is a blowup doll, Andre 3000 is a Spartan, and Missy is the Cereal monster! Ludacris and Soulja Boy, who have absolutely nothing in common, blessed ATL-iens with a free concert over the weekend. The show was billed as AT&T’s ‘Unofficial’ 2008 SEC Football Championship Afterparty. Nothing for nothing though, both rappers have an album to promote (shhhh). Devin the Dude and the Coughee Brothaz came through to Warehouse Live on Thanksgiving Eve. Devin set the building ablaze — literally and figuratively. He gave the crowd of mostly teenage fans a whirlwind tour of his catalog with hits like “Lacville 79,” “Anythang,” and “Doobie Ashtray” (one of my favorite Devin tracks). When “What A Job” came on, though, the building erupted. I managed to take some pics, the inadvertent high from second-hand smoke notwithstanding.

Houston hip-hop artists always pride themselves in their ability to unite behind a movement. This year’s Los Magnificos Car Show & Concert, held at Reliant Stadium, gave H-Town rappers a chance to reaffirm that spirit of harmony. Every major player in Texas hip-hop scene graced the stage on Sunday. Beef? What beef? Smiles and handshakes were exchanged backstage. Chamillionaire was hanging out with Paul Wall and Krayzie Bone; Bun B was chopping it up with Slim and Paul, etc.
The performances were solid, but no one rocked the stage harder than Mr. Scarface himself. After his set, ‘Face accepted the Pioneer Award on behalf of Geto Boys. The only disappointment was that the artists didn’t perform together as promised. Mike Jones’ set was mad quick and his exit was even quicker. Someone should have told him that Trae wasn’t slated to arrive till 2 hours later. Oh yeah, that beef.
