Rizoh’s Radio 31: Evens & Odds

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Funny how situations sometimes find a way to sort themselves out. For RR 31, I was going to drop about 15 - 20 (instead of 31) songs for lack of sufficient quality material. But in the last couple of days of working on the compilation, a flurry of hot new songs started raining like confetti.

Rizoh’s Radio 30 - ‘Savage Bounce’

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

It’s been long in the making but Rizoh’s Radio 30 is finally here. And yes, it’s 30 songs deep. I named it Savage Bounce because there’s plenty of contrast on this mix.

It builds up slowly with some commentary on the state of hip-hop and society, and then evolves into a block party. That pretty much sums up the two sides of our story. Today’s society is rife with figurative savages, be it ferocious world leaders or barbaric corporate head honchos who continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the not-so-privileged.

The “Bounce” aspect represents our reaction to those societal ills. Amidst soaring gas prices and economic crises, we somehow manage to dance away our troubles. Thus the title, Savage Bounce.

One more thing, I’m aware that Q-Tip’s “Getting Up” appears twice on this mix. No, Q-Tip didn’t put a gun to my head and force me to impose his new single on you. Turns out he created an extended version in addition to the main version for the purpose of inciting a remix craze. So, if you’re an aspiring MC, Tip wants you to hop on “the end where the beat and bass are NAKED!! Take that sh*t and get busy!!” His words, not mine.

Enough talking already. Go ahead and grab it while you can. Feedback, suggestions, and fridge-throwing are always welcome.

Rizoh’s Radio 29: Blackout

The 29th installment of our Rizoh’s Radio series is here. I broke my tradition of restricting the compilation to mostly new songs by including a few dated tracks, such as Saigon’s “Believe It.” It’s just a terribly catchy song and I figured some people would appreciate its inclusion. See full tracklist and download link below.

Rizoh’s Radio 27: Beat Tape

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

I used to envy radio DJs before I became a blogger, because they had access to some of the hottest instrumentals. Back then, I would hear the “Hard Knock Life” beat or “In Da Club” beat playing in the background as Mr. DJ rambled on about the string of joints he’s getting ready to spin for the hour, and I always wondered if it was possible for a regular Joe to get his hands on those prestigious instrumentals. That was then. This is now.

What follows is a new compilation, chock-full of flaming instrumentals.

I’ve been in Austin all weekend and I’m so ready to head back to H-Town. I have to admit that Austin has better live music culture than Houston, but you wouldn’t know it from watching the hippie band that entertained us at Salt Lick BBQ last night. I’ll just take solace in the fact that we have better music overall.

The drive is anywhere from 2.5 - 3 hours depending on traffic, so I’ve strewn together a 2-hour, 32-song playlist of mostly new music to make the journey worthwhile.

What do you think of my playlist? Feel free to holla if you need any of the tracks on the list.
